  • [08] Demonstration - Haider 1710:CYPPRESS:01 Finance Minister - Accountant's Conference Nicosia, Feb 24 (CNA) - Prospects for international businesses in Cyprus are promising, Finance Minister Takis Klerides said today, pointing out that the services sector will benefit from the restructuring in production, induced by the island's forthcoming accession to the European Union. Speaking at a conference organised by the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Cyprus entitle "The Cyprus International Business Sector and the process of accession of Cyprus to the European Union", Klerides also said that efforts will be made to maintain favourable conditions for international businesses on the island.     1900:CYPPRESS:04 Spokesman - Echelon - British Bases Nicosia, Feb 24 (CNA) - The government does not intend to comment on reports about surveillance equipment, operating on the territory of the British Bases on the island, until it establishes all the facts about this issue, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said here today. Meanwhile Defence Minister Socrates Hasikos said today his Ministry has asked, through the Foreign Ministry, for "certain clarifications from the British" on the issue.

    1910:CYPPRESS:05 Polish MPs - House Foreign Affairs Committee Nicosia, Feb 24 (CNA) - Polish MPs visiting the island said today that "Cyprus is a very important partner for Poland", adding that "Cyprus is a country which is much more advanced economically from most of the six countries" aspiring to join the 15-nation bloc. Speaking after a meeting with the Chairman of the Cyprus House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee, Tassos Papadopoulos, the Deputy Chairmen of the respective Polish Committee, Krzysztof Kaminski and Longin Pastusiak, said that "coming together and not competing with each other, but joining our efforts in the negotiations, which are not easy, we can be in the EU earlier than later".

    CNA/SD/RG/MCH/2000 1920:CYPPRESS:06 President Clerides - Annual Cyprus Shipping Council Meeting Nicosia, Feb 24 (CNA) - President Glafcos Clerides said today that "on account of the size and the strength of the shipping industry in Cyprus, the future of Cyprus shipping can only be positive and prosperous for both the industry and Cyprus in general". In an address to the 11th Annual General Meeting of the Cyprus Shipping Council, read out by Minister of Communications and Works Averof Neophytou, President Clerides stressed the government's "strong dedication towards enhancing the image of the Cyprus flag and the Cyprus Maritime Administration".     2010:CYPPRESS:07 PEO - 23rd Congress Nicosia, Feb 24 (CNA) - The Pancyprian Workers' Federation (PEO) began its 23rd Congress today in Nicosia, with the participation of about 1.000 delegates and 200 guests, in the presence of officials from Cyprus and abroad, as well as representatives of Turkish Cypriot trade unions. Addressing the Congress, Minister of Labour and Social Insurance, Andreas Moushouttas, noted the contribution of PEO towards improving the living standards of workers in Cyprus, and reaffirmed that his Ministry would maintain the dialogue among the social partners.

    CNA/RG/MCH/2000 2030:CYPPRESS:08 Demonstration - Haider Nicosia, Feb 24 (CNA) - People of various ages demonstrated today in Eleftheria (Freedom) Square in Nicosia against the rise to power of Joerg Haider's rightist party in Austria. The demonstrators adopted a resolution condemning the participation of Haider's Freedom Party in the Austrian government and marched to the Austrian Consulate, in the mailbox of which they dropped the resolution.
