Nicosia, Jan 28 (CNA) -- Former British Foreign Secretary Lord David Owen expressed today the view that there are "good omens" in regards to prospects for a solution to the Cyprus problem, expressing at the same time certainty for the successful outcome of Cyprus-European Union accession talks.

Owen, who is visiting Cyprus to speak at a conference organised by "The Economist" on the theme "Cyprus and European Union: Priorities in defence and foreign policy issues", was received today by President Glafcos Clerides. Later today he will cross to the Turkish-occupied areas of the island to meet Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

[02] Clinton - Cyprus - State of the Union address

Washington, Jan 28 (CNA) - Cyprus was one of the issues US President Bill Clinton referred to in his state of the union address, saying that his country should be proud of its role. We should be proud of America's role in promoting reconciliation between Greece and Turkey and in Cyprus," Clinton said. Clinton's presidential emissary Alfred Moses and other high ranking US officials have been involved in efforts to settle the Cyprus question for quite some time now.

Next week, Moses, State Department Coordinator Thomas Weston and US Ambassador to Cyprus Donald Bandler will be in Geneva on the sidelines of the second round of UN-led proximity talks. CNA/MM/GP/2000

by Maria Myles Nicosia, Jan 28 (CNA) - The UN will continue next week their probing into the positions of the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides on the four key aspects of the Cyprus question (constitution, territory, distribution of powers and security) with a view to ascertain whether there is any consensus that would take the talks forward to a third round.

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and his special advisor Alvaro de Soto will seek clarifications from both sides on the positions they outlined in the first round of talks, in December in New York, in an attempt to "get separate agreements on the iss ues under discussion with each side."
