[01] EU enlargement commissioner - Visit to Cyprus
Brussels, Jan 26 (CNA) -- European Union Commissioner responsible for
enlargement Guenter Verheugen will be visiting Cyprus in March, where he
will also meet Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash in a bid to convince
him of the need for Turkish Cypriot participation in the Republic's
accession talks.
Announcing yesterday his decision during a meeting of the European
Parliament Foreign Affairs Committee discussing enlargement , Verheugen
expressed the view that December's EU Helsinki summit decision to give
Turkey a candidate status improves the climate in the Cyprus question, even
though he acknowledged that until now there has been no progress in
efforts for a settlement on the island.

Nicosia, Jan 26 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government has expressed regret at the
refusal of the Turkish Cypriot leader to allow a meeting between a senior
European Union official and Turkish Cypriots to take place.
Describing the move as "anachronistic", Cyprus Government Spokesman
Michalis Papapetrou said this kind of attitude is contrary to the climate
created after the EU gave Turkey candidate status at its
Helsinki summit last December.

Nicosia, Jan 26 (CNA) -- The European Commission Services' delegation under
Leopold Maurer began today its meetings here with the Cyprus team
negotiating the island's accession to the European Union and relevant
services to discuss the chapters to be negotiated under the Portuguese
Presidency.
Speaking on the sidelines of the discussions, the head of the Cyprus
team George Vassiliou said the aim of the delegation's visit is to
determine how much progress towards harmonisation with the acquis
communautaire has been achieved and where the process is delayed.
