  • [01] Dutch Premier - Cyprus - EU - Turkey Nicosia, Jan 18 (CNA) -- Dutch Prime Minister Wim Kok has said it is not possible at this moment to say when Cyprus will enter the European Union.

    In an interview published in the Greek press, he stressed however that "there is no restriction on (Cyprus's) future accession in the EU".

  • [02] UNFICYP - Religious sites - Restoration - Spokesman Nicosia, Jan 18 (CNA) -- A UN project to restore two religious sites, a Greek Orthodox and a Moslem one, is a "very important initiative directly related to the culture of Cyprus and its two communities," James Holger, Acting special representative of the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan said here today.

    Echoing the Cyprus government's position on the issue, Holger also expressed hope that this would pave the way for other similar moves to help create the right atmosphere or improve the already fairly positive atmosphere.

  • [03] Ritter - Death - CMP Nicosia, Jan 18 (CNA) -- Ambassador Jean-Pierre Ritter, Third Member of the Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus, died suddenly on Monday, January 17, at his home in Lausanne, Switzerland at the age of 69.

    The announcement of Ritter's death came from Chief of Mission of the United Nations Operation in Cyprus, James Holger.

    Nicosia, Jan 18 (CNA) -- Sweden's new ambassador to Cyprus, Anders Liden today expressed his country's regret for the "plight of the Cypriot people" and the division of the island.

    Presenting his credentials to President of the Republic Glafcos Clerides, Liden also said his country is a "strong proponent of the enlargement of the European Union (EU) and looks forward to the accession of Cyprus".

  • [04] Applications - Turkey - ECHR - Lawyer Nicosia, Jan 18 (CNA) -- The three new applications Cypriot-born citizens of the UK, the US and Australia will file against Ankara to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) of the Council of Europe (CoE) are personal and are irrelevant to the political process underway for a Cyprus settlement.

    This was stated today by one of the lawyers who are handling the case Achilleas Demetriades, at a press conference on the new applications.
