    [01] Security Council President - Cyprus

    New York, Dec 8 (CNA) -- The priority of the UN Security Council at present lies with the talks currently underway under the aegis of the Secretary-General, Council President Sir Jeremy Greenstock said here today, after a brief meeting of the Security Council.

    Sir Jeremy also said that there is time until December 15 to have the mandate of UNFICYP renewed, an indirect albeit clear indication that the resolution on Cyprus will be adopted next week.

    [02] Cypriot MP's - Warsaw - Paris

    Nicosia, Dec 8 (CNA) -- Cyprus House Foreign and European Affairs President, MP Tassos Papadopoulos, left today for Warsaw to participate at a meeting of the Presidents of Parliamentary Foreign Affairs committees of the EU candidate states taking place tomorrow.

    The meeting will focus on the issue of EU enlargement, the intergovernmental meeting results, the forthcoming European Council in Helsinki and the latest progress reports of the EU candidate countries prepared by the European Commission.

    Meanwhile, MP Takis Hadjidemetriou left today for Paris to represent the island's House of Representatives at meetings of the Education and Culture Committee and the Cultural Heritage Subcommittee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe due to take place on December 9-10.

    [03] House of Commons - Early day motion - Cyprus

    London, Dec 8 (CNA) -- An early day motion signed by seven British Labour MPs expresses the House of Commons' support to all initiatives to bring about a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem.

    The early day motion to be tabled today underlines that the House looks forward "to a positive outcome to the current round of negotiations which will enable all the citizens of Cyprus whatever their ethnic origins to live together again peacefully in a free, united Cyprus."

    [04] UN General Assembly - Cyprus - Cultural heritage

    New York, Dec 8 (CNA) -- Cyprus has called on the international community to help its effort to pursue the return of every cultural object illegally removed from the island.

    The international appeal came from the country's Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Sotos Zakheos, speaking yesterday at the UN General Assembly.

    [05] Airports - Work stoppage - Air controllers

    Nicosia, Dec 8 (CNA) -- A four-hour work stoppage at the island's international airports by air traffic controllers began this afternoon and it is expected to cause numerous flight delays.

    A statement by the Civil Servants Trade Union (PASIDI) criticised government plans for privatisation of the department.
