    [01] US - Cyprus problem

Washington, Nov 30 (CNA) -- The US believe the UN-led talks on the Cyprus issue beginning in New York on December 3 should be substantive, core issues discussed and that either side may bring other matters on the table.

Replying to questions State Department Spokesman James Rubin told his briefing yesterday that "the purpose of these talks is to prepare the ground for meaningful negotiations leading to a comprehensive settlement."

    [04] UNFICYP Commander - Interview

    by Maria Myles

Nicosia, Nov 30 (CNA) -- Increased interest and engagement at the top political level by the international community in the Cyprus question now offers much better prospects for a settlement, outgoing UNFICYP Commander Major General Evergisto Arturo de Vergara believes.

The Force Commander, who concludes his term in office in mid-December, also said a proposal put forward by Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides for demilitarisation, which he considers to be a political issue, has not even been taken up by his force or dealt with in his dealings with the two sides on the island.

[05] Greek, Turkish, Cypriot environmentalists - Protest

Nicosia, Nov 30 (CNA) -- Greek, Turkish and Cypriot environmentalists will join forces on December 4 in Athens to protest against the construction of a nuclear power station at Akkuyu Bay, on Turkey's southern coast, approximately 120 kilometres north of the island of Cyprus.

According to a press release issued today by the Cyprus Environmentalists Group the protest will take place outside the Embassy of Canada in Athens. It is the first anti-nuclear protest jointly organised of Greek, Turkish and Cypriot environmentalists.

[07] Cyprus question - UN talks

    by Maria Myles

Nicosia, Nov 30 (CNA) -- With the UN-sponsored proximity talks looming on the horizon and a determined effort by all key players in the Cyprus peace effort, the UN seem to direct their effort towards a process that would allow initial discussions to begin with what is considered to be "easy issues."

"We will not let the Turkish Cypriot leader get away with the usual tricks, we mean business and talks will be substantive," diplomatic sources have told CNA.
