    [01] Cypriot scientist - Grant - Cancer Research

    London, Nov 27 (CNA) -- The Association for International Cancer Research (AICR) has offered this year a 100.000 Cyprus pound grant to Cypriot scientist Dr. Leonidas Phylactou of the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics (CING) to carry out research in the area of cancer.

    The aim of the research project is to investigate the ability of the genetic molecules, called ribozymes to repair defects in genes, present in most types of cancer.

    [02] Pauline Green - Resigning

    London, Nov 27 (CNA) -- One of most avid supporters of the Cyprus cause, British Labour MEP and European Parliament's rapporteur on Cyprus' accession to the European Union, Pauline Green, announced she will be leaving the Parliament at the end of the year.

    In a letter to British Prime Minister Tony Blair yesterday Green announced she has been appointed Chief Executive of the Co-Operative Union and will resigning as Labour Member of Parliament for London as from the 31st December 1999.

    [03] Turkish warplanes - Violations - Cyprus airspace

    Nicosia, Nov 27 (CNA) -- A total of 18 Turkish warplanes violated the Cyprus airspace on two occasions here Saturday, a spokesman for the Defence Ministry told CNA.

    He said the violations took place between 0920 local time (0720 GMT) and 1300 (1100 GMT).

    Fourteen F16 warplanes and four F4s violated the Cyprus airspace, the Spokesman said, noting the planes were taking part in the main phase of the Turkish Armed Forces annual military manoeuvre "Toros '99" which is taking place in international waters off the occupied north of Cyprus in the eastern Mediterranean.
