    [01] Carl Lewis - Children with special needs

    Nicosia, Nov 2 CNA) -- Nine times Olympic gold medalist, American track and field athlete Carl Lewis stressed today the importance of giving children with special needs greater attention and love.

    Lewis was speaking after visiting Christos Stelios Ioannou Foundation for mentally retarded children, in a way of expressing his support to the annual Radiomarathon charity for children with special needs, which opened yesterday and concludes tonight at midnight.

    [02] Missing - Exhumations

    Nicosia, Nov 2 (CNA) -- Foreign and local experts have identified the remains of eight persons, exhumed in the summer, as part of the process of exhumation and identification of war dead and missing persons from the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus, a Foreign Ministry press release said here today.

    Seven of the eight were originally buried as named persons and one is on the list of missing persons, it said, noting that all the families concerned were notified.

    [03] Spokesman - Ecevit

    Nicosia, Nov 2 (CNA) -- Comments by Turkish Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit that there are two so-called independent states in Cyprus are not helpful in efforts to break the deadlock in the Cyprus question, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said today.

    "Comments like this leave no room for optimism and make things more difficult," Papapetrou said.

    [04] New Maltese High Commissioner - Credentials

    Nicosia, Nov 2 (CNA) -- The new High Commissioner of Malta to Cyprus, Evarist Saliba, presented his credentials today to President Glafcos Clerides, reassuring that his country will continue to give its "consistent and full-hearted support for the unification of Cyprus".

    Saliba said that Cyprus and Malta are "both pursuing a common aim which should prove of mutual support in seeking membership of the European Union".

    [05] Czech delegation - Meetings

    Nicosia, Nov 2 (CNA) -- A delegation of the Czech Republic Senate Committee on European Integration, met today in Nicosia with Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides and Attorney General Alecos Markides.

    Speaking through an interpreter, Chairperson of the Committee, Jarmila Filipova, expressed her country interested in a speedy solution to the Cyprus problem, and expressed hope that "with the cooperation of all interested countries and states," a just and peaceful settlement will be achieved.

    [06] Spokesman - Clinton

    Nicosia, Nov 2 (CNA) -- The government has called on US President Bill Clinton to keep his promises and deal with the Cyprus problem seriously, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said.

    The spokesman also said there are "concrete assurances from the American side that the Cyprus issue will be very high in the President's agenda during his visit", later this month.

    [07] President Clerides - International Union of Economists

    Nicosia, Nov 2 (CNA) -- The annual Meeting of the Members of the International Union of Economists, which opened today in Limassol with the participation of delegates from France, Russia, Spain, Bulgaria, Ukraine and Kyrgyz, will address the issue "Economy of non-productive sphere: International Cooperation".

    In an inaugural speech, President Glafcos Clerides said that professional economists and scientists "play a significant role in present day societies", adding that "an economy capable of offering the goods and services demanded by its citizens is a necessary condition for social peace and for a well-functioning state".

    [08] Exhumations - Results - Press conference

    Nicosia, Nov 2 (CNA) -- The scientific teams, in charge of the exhumation and identification of remains of war dead and missing persons of the 1974 Turkish invasion, are confident that the initial results they have reached are positive and said they expect to have more remains identified in February next year.

    The leaders of the teams, William Haglund and Marios Kariolou, also stressed the need to have more ante mortem information and blood samples from the relatives to allow them to continue their work.
