    [02] Union of Cyprus Journalists - Kishlali murder

    Nicosia, Oct 22 (CNA) -- The Union of Cyprus Journalists (UCJ) expresses revulsion and anger for the brutal murder of Turkish journalist Ahmet Taner Kishlali in Ankara yesterday, noting that this was one more blow to the freedom of the press.

    In a statement the UCJ expresses its condolences to Kishlali's family and says that together with other national and international unions of journalists it is making representations to the Turkish government over the murder.

    [03] CSE - Tax - Finance Minister

    Nicosia, Oct 22 (CNA) -- The government has tabled a bill to the House of Representatives, imposing a one per cent tax on all transactions at the Cyprus Stock Exchange.

    Presenting today the budget for the year 2000 before the House Finance Committee, Finance Minister Takis Klerides said the government expects the new tax to yield around 60 million Cyprus pounds per year.

    [04] Conference - Corruption - Ends - Recommendations

    Limassol, Oct 22 (CNA) -- The 4th Conference of Specialised Services in the Fight Against Corruption, organised by the Law Office of the Republic, in cooperation with the Council of Europe, ended today with recommendations to improve the situation and facilitate international cooperation.

    Speaking at a press conference, Attorney General Alecos Markides said that the aim of the Conference was to identify international cooperation problems in combatting corruption, and to agree on proposals to solve these problems.

    [05] Spokesman - UNFICYP - Event

    Nicosia, Oct 22 (CNA) -- The government said today that "every possibility offered for Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot contacts should be utilised" by the Greek Cypriot side.

    Referring to an UNFICYP entertainment event, to be held at the Ledra Palace checkpoint on Sunday for all residents of Cyprus, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said that the government welcomes such events.

    [06] German-Cypriot Forum - Press conference

    Nicosia, Oct 22 (CNA) -- The German-Cypriot Forum will "attempt to influence the political decision-makers in Germany to put the Cyprus issue on the agenda of the next European Union (EU) summit in Helsinki in respect of a new EU-option for Turkey".

    Speaking at a press conference today, Forum president Eckart Kuhlwein also referred to the fact-finding mission to Cyprus of a delegation from the forum where they met political parties, trade unions, chambers of commerce, bi-communal groups, scholars and cultural societies from both sides of the divide.
