    [01] House President - Visit to Israel

    Nicosia, Sep 28 (CNA) -Ä Cyprus House of Representatives President Spyros Kyprianou, heading a top level parliamentary delegation, will pay an official visit to Israel from November 21 to 24, at the invitation of his counterpart Avraham Burg.

    Details of the visit, expected to boost the already existing good relations and cooperation between the two countries, were discussed today at a meeting between Kyprianou and Israeli ambassador to Cyprus Shemi Tzur.

    [02] Israeli ambassador - Cyprus question

    Nicosia, Sep 28 -- Israel believes that political problems can only be settled through negotiations between the parties involved, its ambassador to Cyprus Shemi Tzur said here today, citing the Middle East as an example.

    The Israeli ambassador said his country supports international efforts to settle the protracted Cyprus problem, noting this would not only benefit the people of the island but is important to peace and stability in the region.

    [03] President Clerides - US-Cyprus trade

    New York, Sep 28 (CNA) -- The Cyprus - US Chamber of Commerce, in its first year of operation, "has fulfilled its principal aim of promoting and strengthening even further the financial and commercial ties between Cyprus and the US".

    This was stated today by President Glafcos Clerides at a meeting of the Cyprus-US Chamber of Commerce at the Harvard Club in New York.

    [04] Greece - Turkey - Cyprus

    Athens Sep 28 (CNA) -- Greece has dismissed Turkish comments that it would be unreasonable to expect a solution of the protracted Cyprus question, pointing out that the problem is an international issue.

    Greek Government Spokesman Demetris Reppas said unfortunately Turkey remains firm in its positions and statements by Turkish officials so far do not allow optimism.

    [05] Turkish Cypriot press - Document

    Nicosia, Sep 28 (CNA) -- A Turkish document, outlining Ankara's steps to promote the annexation of Cyprus' occupied areas into Turkey, made the headlines in the Turkish Cypriot daily "Yeni Duzen" today.

    The paper published the document, signed by Turkish Premier Bulent Ecevit on 12 April, said Ankara and its self-styled regime in occupied Cyprus will make the necessary moves towards annexation.

    [06] "Louis Cruise Lines" - New vessel

    Nicosia, Sep 28 (CNA) -- "Louis Cruise Lines Ltd" has announced the purchase of the cruise liner "Mermoz", a luxury ship which can accommodate 739 passengers in 300 fully equipped cabins.

    "Mermoz", a 162-metre long vessel with a tonnage of 14,2, will replace the cruise liner "Ausonia" which has been chartered to "First Choice", one of the leading British tour operators.

    [07] Salamis - Ancient kingdom - New Book

    Nicosia, Sep 28 (CNA) -- The splendor that was Salamis, one of Cyprus' ten ancient city-kingdoms, and the hard work over the years that unearthed its magnificent remains are commemorated in a newly published book entitled "Excavating Salamis of Cyprus - 1952 - 1974."

    The 206-page book, beautifully illustrated and comprising 242 black and white and colour photographs, outlines in great detail Cyprus' most extensive and most important excavations and more importantly the human aspect of the hard toil over 22 years.

    [08] Greek Defence Minister - Official visit

    Nicosia, Sep 28 (CNA) -- Greek Defence Minister Akis Tsohatzopoulos will pay a four-day official visit to Cyprus, during which he will watch the military parade marking the 39th anniversary of Cyprus' independence on 1 October and visit the Paphos air base.

    Tsohatzopoulos, who arrives on Thursday evening, will have talks with his Cypriot counterpart Socrates Hasikos on Friday morning.

    [09] Clinton - Ecevit

    Washington, Sep 28 (CNA) -- US President Bill Clinton said he would like to see the resumption of Cyprus peace talks under UN aegis without preconditions.

    He also expressed support for Turkey's European bid to join the European Union and said he noted a change of heart among EU member states towards Turkey.

    [10] President Clerides - Five Permanent Members

    New York, Sep 28 -- The five permanent members of the UN Security Council insist that talks aiming at a settlement of the protracted Cyprus question should resume, President Glafcos Clerides said here today.

    Speaking after a working lunch he hosted for the representatives of the five permanent members, Clerides said they discussed "in depth the reasons of Turkish intransigence (in efforts to find a solution to the Cyprus problem) and ways of dealing with them".
