    [01] SOCCER: Omonia 3 - Belshina 0

Nicosia, Aug 27 (CNA) -- Nicosia soccer club Omonia qualified for the first round of the UEFA Cup after beating 3 - 0 Belshina Bobruisk (Belarus) here last night.

Omonia's German striker Reiner Roufmann scored all three goals in the second half (65', 67', 73').

In the first away leg the Cyprus team thrashed Belshina 5 -1. Two other Cypriot teams, champions Anorthosis Famagusta and cup winners APOEL Nicosia have failed to qualify.

Anorthosis drew at home 0 - 0 with Hertha Berlin. The refugee club had suffered a 2 - 0 away defeat.

APOEL were defeated 2 - 0 away by Levski Sofia. The first leg in Nicosia had ended in a goalless draw.

[02] President - British High Commissioner

Nicosia, Aug 27 (CNA) -- Britain intends to work, with others, to render the prospects for a Cyprus settlement better, British High Commissioner in Nicosia Edward Clay has said.

At the same time, he expressed the conviction that Cypriots do want to see a solution on the island and said consultations on the Cyprus question will now move to New York, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

Speaking after an hour-long meeting with President Glafcos Clerides, Clay said he discussed "prospects for the approach to the settlement of Cyprus problem, which we all hope will receive renewed impetus this autumn".

Asked if the prospects are good, bad or better than in the past, he said "they are as good as we can make them and we intend to make them even better."

Replying to questions, the British High Commissioner said he gets this feeling from "the determination of the British government and others have to work at this problem and to worry it to a settlement."

Asked if this determination is present on the island on both sides of the divide, Clay said he hoped so and added "Cypriots would like this problem settled."

Plans for a visit to Cyprus by Britain's representative for the Cyprus problem Sir David Hannay have been altered and he would not be coming, as initially announced, in early September.

Instead he would be in New York for contacts during the UN General Assembly. Hannay has already requested a meeting with Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides in New York.

Clay refrained from commenting on an assessment by US Permanent Representative to the UN Richard Holbrooke that the Turkish side is to blame for the many problems that arise in efforts to settle the Cyprus question.

"I would not dare to comment on anything Holbrooke said and it is not for me to do so," he said.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 per cent of its territory.

The British diplomat was accompanied by the High Commission's new press spokesman Jonathan Allen, whom Clay presented to the press.
