[01] Bone Marrow Bank - Overseas Cypriots

Nicosia, Aug 26 (CNA) -- Overseas Cypriots, meeting here at their annual conference, have decided to set up a world bone marrow donor bank to facilitate worldwide efforts to find donors for Cypriots who need a bone marrow transplant.

The proposed bank is to cooperate with the Karaiskakeon Foundation, the Cyprus Bone Marrow Donor Bank, which is the largest Greek bone marrow donor bank with more than 6.500 volunteers.

The whole effort will be coordinated by the Federation of Cypriot Organisations in Greece, which initiated the moves to set up the world donor bank.

The Federation intends to organise a special function in November in Athens to make the public more aware of the need for a donor bank and explain that the genetic make up of Cypriots and Greeks around the world can help efforts to find donors.

The proposal also aims to give a boost to the funds of the Karaiskakeon Foundation, a charity, to allow it to continue its charitable work.

[03] Defence Minister - Visit to Greece - Pact

Nicosia, Aug 26 (CNA) -- New Cyprus Defence Minister Socrates Hassikos today underlined that the joint defence pact agreed between Nicosia and Athens exists and will continue existing.

He said consultations were underway to set a date for a meeting with his Greek counterpart Akis Tsohatzopoulos.

Speaking to the press before a meeting at the National Guard Headquarters, his first visit since taking up his post yesterday, Hassikos announced he had a telephone conversation today with Tsohatzopoulos.

The Defence Minister pointed out Greece's support to Cyprus and said he would visit Athens for talks with his counterpart.

The permanent secretaries at the two ministries were in touch to fix a date, he said.

Replying to questions Hassikos expressed support to the strengthening of the island's defence as well as the pact agreed between the two countries in 1993 which provides that Greece will offer Cyprus air, sea and land coverage in case of a new Turkish offensive.

"Our position remains the same: we support the strengthening of our defence within the framework of the joint defence pact," he said.

The new Defence Minister called for restraint in public statements and press reports on defence matters.
