    [01] House President - Turkey - Earthquake

Nicosia, Aug 18 (CNA) -- Cyprus House of Representatives President Spyros Kyprianou has expressed "sincere sympathy" to all the victims of the terrible earthquake that rocked Turkey, which resulted in the death of more than 3,000 people.

"Our thoughts are with the ordinary people who are suffering", he said in a statement, but noted that "one should not forget that Turkey continues to occupy 37 per cent of Cyprus' territory."

He said "our opponent is the official Turkish state and its expansionist policies."

In a written statement, issued here today, he said "one cannot disregard the fact that Ankara is responsible for many crimes against the Republic of Cyprus and its people, including ethnic cleansing."

Turkey is also responsible for the uprooting of thousands of people from the areas it occupies and the transfer to Cyprus of thousands of illegal settlers from Turkey, not to mention the destruction of Cyprus' cultural heritage.

"In spite of all these, one cannot be glad with the human drama of the people of Turkey in the earthquake stricken areas. On the contrary, we feel sincere sympathy for all the victims of this disaster, the relatives of the thousands of the dead, the injured and the homeless," the statement added.

The House President noted that the people of Cyprus "have the strength over and above their own concerns about the future of Cyprus and the human rights of our people, irrespective of ethnic origin, to turn our attention and thoughts to the ordinary people in Turkey who are suffering."

He added "we have nothing against the Turkish people, our opponent is the official Turkish state and its expansionist policy."

[02] Stock Exchange - Third consecutive all-time high

Nicosia, Aug 18 (CNA) -- Shares on the Cyprus Stock Exchange (CSE) continued their rally today pushing the General Index to a new all-time high.

The Index today reached its third consecutive all-time high just after the CSE week-long closure, as it went up by 0,7 per cent to 326,93.

The closure had been decided by the CSE Board in order to give dealers time to clear up a backlog of paperwork caused by huge trading volumes over the last weeks.

The volume of transactions fell to 28,4 million Cyprus pounds from 33, 6 million pounds yesterday (one Cyprus pound is trading at 1,85 US dollars).

Last year the average daily volume of transactions was 1,4 million Cyprus pounds while for July 1999 it reached 20 million.
