[01] Omonia - APOEL - UEFA Cup

Nicosia's Omonia last night won the Belarus side Belshina Bodruisk 5 - 1 in Minsk, in the first leg of the qualifying round, with goals by Kalotheou, Mihajlovic, Rauffmann, Kaiaphas and Constantinides.

Khrypach scored for the Belarus side. The second Cyprus side APOEL played a no-score draw against Bulgaria's Levski Sofia in Nicosia.

[02] President Clerides - Foreign MPs

Speaking after the meeting Chairman of the Cyprus Parliamentary group in the British Parliament, Tom Cox said that if talks for a Cyprus settlement are to "have any success whatsoever, then there must be a dramatic change of attitude adopted by Mr. Denktash and his friends and supporters in Turkey".

Cox pointed out that many times during the last 25 years "we have been led to believe that at long last Mr. Denktash was going to talk constructively, and then we found that that did not happen," adding that "discussions should centre on the resolutions passed by the UN Security Council".

Reaffirming that the British government would not recognise "the supposed independent state in occupied northern Cyprus, that Mr. Denktash set up", Cox said:

"The people of Cyprus, the Republic of Cyprus have in our view suffered long enough. We are not giving up now. We are not prepared to be in any agreement that gives any concessions to the people who invaded the Republic of Cyprus 25 years ago."

Cox added this was the message he and his colleagues would convey to British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Foreign and Commonwealth Secretary Robin Cook.

"In turn we will expect Prime Minister Blair and Secretary Cook to make that very clearly known to US President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Madeleine Albright," he added.

Greek New Democracy MP Apostolos Stavrou expressed the hope that those who have the main responsibility for resolving the Cyprus problem will exercise pressures towards the Turkish side so it abandons its extremist view that the problem was resolved as a result of the 1974 invasion against Cyprus.

Both the Turkish side and the great powers should realise that "the Cyprus Republic and the people of Cyprus are struggling for the restoration of justice, while the other side (Turkish) is struggling for the leagalisation of illegality".

The foreign MPs and other dignitaries are in Cyprus to attend an event tomorrow evening in Dherynia, in the east of the island, on the occasion of 25 years since the occupation of the eastern coastal town of Famagusta.

The Mayor of the Turkish-occupied town, Andreas Pouyiouros praised their support and assistance for a peaceful and just solution to the Cyprus problem.

The foreign MPs were also scheduled to meet with President of the House of Representatives, Spyros Kyprianou.

[03] British tourist - Trial

Gavin Kirin Gallimore, a 29-year-old building contractor from London, was arrested on August 4 after police tracked him down, following an attack against a Greek Cypriot at a local disco.

Loukas Ioannou, 28, from the village of Peristerona, underwent major surgery for severe head injuries caused when Gallimore punched him until he fell to the ground, covered in blood. He is still in hospital in a critical condition.

After the attack, Gallimore left the scene. The Londoner will appear before the Assize court on 20 September.

[04] Greek Cypriot - Freed

Speaking to CNA, UNFICYP Spokeswoman Sarah Russell said Georgiou was "fined" by an illegal court 200 million Turkish lira (some 500 US dollars), which he paid and was then set free.

Georgiou's car was also returned to the free areas. Russell said an UNFICYP doctor had offered to examine Georgiou but the latter refused.

Georgiou was "then taken to Paphos Gate police station," Russell added.

The Greek Cypriot 48-year old, who has Canadian citizenship, was abducted when he accidentally crossed into the Turkish-occupied areas.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 per cent of the island's territory.
