    [02] Foreign Minister - Return - Sarajevo

Larnaca, Jul 31 (CNA) -- Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides said today there was a greater possibility for the UN Secretary to call for talks on Cyprus this Autumn than not.

Returning form a trip to Sarajevo, via Athens, where he represented Cyprus in the Stability Pact Summit, Kasoulides also said that during his stay there he had the opportunity to exchange views with world leaders including US President Bill Clinton and French President Jacques Chirac.

Replying to questions of the press, Kasoulides said he expected that "the UN Secretary General would by the end of September call the sides (in Cyprus) for negotiations".

"The possibility the UN Chief will call for talks is greater than the possibility not to", Kasoulides said and pointed out that Kofi Annan had committed himself to this in his latest report to the UN Security Council.

Security Council Resolution 1250 (28 June 1999) calls upon the two leaders", President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash to enter talks on the Cyprus problem with "no preconditions, all issues on the table, commitment in good faith to continue until a settlement is reached and full consideration of relevant UN resolutions and treaties".

Kasoulides stressed that the Greek Cypriot side will not accept any preconditions set by Denktash whether before or during the negotiations.

Denktash has demanded that the illegal entity unilaterally declared in the northern Turkish-occupied part of the island is recognised as a separate state, despite numerous UN resolutions condemning all secessionist actions and calling "upon all states not to recognise any Cypriot state other than the Republic of Cyprus".

Denktash has also put forward demands for a confederation of two states in Cyprus, despite UN resolutions including the most recent one 1251 calling for a bi-communal, bi-zonal federation with a single sovereignty and international personality.
