[01] Waterpark Association - Summer meeting

In his remarks to some 100 delegates from various countries, he said he was "proud to have Waterworld Waterpark member of the EWA" and described this year's meeting as "one of the most successful ever."

He also said that Cyprus' reunification would contribute a great deal to the country's further economic and tourist development.

This holiday resort, on the south east, lies very close to the ceasefire line, which divides Cyprus since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied the northern part of the island.

Present at the two-day meeting was the president of the World Waterpark Association Al Turner.

Addressing delegates, House President Spyros Kyprianou said projects such as the "Waterworld Waterpark" are necessary in Cyprus to help develop the tourist industry, a very important sector of the local economy.

Ayia Napa mayor Barbara Pericleous pledged her support to this kind of projects because as she said "they improve the tourist infrastructure and encourage tourists to visit Ayia Napa."

"Waterworld Waterpark", in its fourth year of operation, has won three major awards from the World Waterpark Association, for best brochure and best radio commercial in 1997, and a year later it won the highest award for outstanding achievement "The executive board award."

"Waterworld Waterpark" boasts the only ride of its kind in the world with light, sound and visual effects within the tube, called "Drop to Altantis", due to open in June.

[02] President Clerides - Return from China

The President welcomed a joint statement on Cyprus by the Foreign Ministers of the G8 group (seven most industrialised nations plus Russia) calling for comprehensive negotiations without preconditions and a settlement on the basis of UN resolutions.

Speaking on arrival at Larnaca airport, Clerides described his visit to China as "important" and said "we talked freely on various issues, including the Cyprus question."

The Chinese political leadership, the President said, expressed "support for an independent, sovereign Cypriot state and back the integrity and unity of Cyprus' territory as well as a solution that would result from the implementation of UN resolutions."

Clerides said there was "identity of views on the need for a peaceful resolution of problems through the UN, the respect of borders of countries and of human rights."

Commenting of the G8 communique, relating to Cyprus, the President said this included two positive elements, the support for a settlement on the basis of UN Security Council resolutions and a recommendation for negotiations with the Turkish Cypriot side without preconditions.

"We have never laid down any preconditions because the UN resolutions are not a precondition. They determine the parametres set by the Security Council," the President explained.

He said the G8 communique will go before the leaders of the group at their meeting in Cologne next week and will also be conveyed to the UN Secretary General.

"Let us wait and see," he said. The Turkish Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktash, insists that his self- styled regime in Turkish occupied Cyprus be recognised as a state before he returns to the negotiating table.

[03] Defence Minister - France air show - Athens

The Minister disclosed that after his return from Paris, he will go to Athens for talks with Greek Defence Minister Akis Tsohatzopoulos on matters already under discussion between the two ministries.

He said the Bourget air show is very big with the participation of hundreds of companies from many countries around the world and he will visit pavilions to see exhibits that may be of interest to Cyprus.

On June 15 he is scheduled to have a meeting with Richard. "On Sunday, 20 June, I will go to Athens to meet the following day with Tsohatzopoulos. Discussions will focus on issues we have dealt with in the past and I hope we will agree on specific decisions," the minister said on his departure for Paris.

Commenting on Turkish air and naval manoeuvres, he said the National Guard is monitoring the situation, noting that these were preplanned.

"We know in every detail how these manoeuvres are proceeding," he said.

Chrysostomis is accompanied by the Commander of the National Guard Demetrios Demou and the ministry's permanent secretary Petros Kareklas.
