    [01] Cypriot deputies - France

Nicosia, May 20 (CNA) -- France has not and does not pose any political obstacles to Cyprus' accession negotiations with the European Union, Pierre Moscovici, French Minister responsible for European affairs, has said.

The assurance was given at a meeting in Paris with Cypriot parliamentarians on an official visit to the French capital, at the invitation of the chairman of the French - Cyprus Friendship Group at the French National Assembly, Michel Gregoire.

Cyprus' membership talks were the focus of the Paris discussions and both sides exchanged views on the matter and France's contribution to the process.

The Cypriot MP's had also a series of meetings with French officials and politicians, including Jean Vidal, advisor to the French Prime Minister, who has undertaken to brief Premier Lionel Jospin about the views of the Cypriot deputies.

    [04] National Council - Spokesman

Nicosia, May 20 (CNA) -- Cypriot political parties, members of the National Council, are expected to submit proposals on various aspects of the Cyprus question to the President by mid June before the Council meets again on 25 June, Government Spokesman Costas Serezis announced here today.

Speaking after today's Council meeting, Serezis said President Glafcos Clerides explained that there have been no "substantive developments in the Cyprus problem" since mid March, when the Council last met.

"At today's meeting, it was agreed that the various parties will submit in writing their suggestions to the President on the aspects of the Cyprus question on which they wish to outline their views in the light of new developments," Serezis said.

It was also agreed that the Council, the top advisory body to the President of the handling of the Cyprus problem, will meet on 25 June to discuss the party proposals.

The proposals should be submitted by 15 June, he said. Asked if Council members discussed issues relating to the war in Yugoslavia, the spokesman said some views were aired but there was no in depth discussion.

"These matters will be dealt with in depth at the next Council meeting, " Serezis added.

[05] Popular Bank Group - Lazarides - European Popular Bank

    by George Yiannaki

Nicosia, May 20 (CNA) -- Cyprus' Popular Bank Group Chairman Kikis Lazarides today said the European Popular Bank share will be probably listed in the Athens Stock Exchange (ASE) in a few months' time.

Lazarides yesterday announced that the Group intends to seek the listing of the share of its subsidiary, the European Popular Bank, in the ASE.

Lazarides told CNA that it would be very difficult to define the exact date of the listing, adding the necessary contacts have already begun.

He pointed out, however, "the listing is expected to be successful, as the European Popular Bank is considered in Greece as robust and strong".

The fact that the Group intends to increase the European Popular Bank's share capital from 5,5 billion drachmas to 25 billion will certainly facilitate the listing, he said (one US dollar is trading at around 305 drachmas).

Responding to a question, Lazarides said the listing of the European Popular Bank share in the ASE will have a considerable positive impact on the Group itself.

Asked whether he considered the recent continuous rally at the Cyprus Stock Exchange (CSE) as a "healthy development", he said the rally was normal and expected, as shares were undervalued.

Asked on the possibility of "dangerous developments" as a result of the persisting rally, he said such developments are most unlikely, "as the surge is justified, the Cyprus economy is doing well and its prospects are good".

Nicosia, May 20 (CNA) -- A Cypriot mayor will head a 12-member Council of Europe (CoE) delegation to Moldova to monitor local and regional elections due to be held on Sunday, May 23.

Larnaca Mayor George Lykourgos, who has been elected rapporteur by the CoE Congress of Local and Regional Authorities, left for Moldova today. The delegation will stay in the country between May 20-25.

Moldova was accepted as a CoE member under the condition of improving democratic procedures in all fields, including local administration.

During its stay in Moldova, the CoE delegation will have meetings with government officials and political party representatives.
