    [01] CYTA - IRIS - New company

    Nicosia, May 5 (CNA) -- A new company named "Iris Gateway Satellite Services Limited" (IRIS) has been set up to provide satellite turnaround and fibre connectivity facilities between Asia and Europe.

    The Cyprus Telecommunications Authority (CYTA) announced that the joint venture company formed by CYTA's subsidiary company "DIGIMED" and "Merlin Communications International, will be officially launched next September.

    Facilities will be fully operational by the end of July 1999, CYTA said.

    The new company will provide a high-quality ground link between Asian and European satellites and communications systems.

    The principle services will be based around digital DVB technology, allowing for provision of video, audio and data distribution, as well as emerging IP backbone services.

    "IRIS" will provide a competitive and comprehensive services, covering Asia, the Middle East and Europe, CYTA said.

    CYTA will operate, maintain and manage the earth station and the British company "Merlin Communications" will perform the sales and marketing functions of the new company.
