CNA MAN/RG/MM/1999ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1635:CYPPRESS:02[02] Spokesman - YugoslaviaNicosia, Apr 22 (CNA) -- Government Spokesman, Costas Serezis, said today that there would not be any consequences on US intentions to resume talks on the Cyprus problem because of the stance the local political parties have adopted on the Yugoslav crisis. The government, he pointed out, "does not see the issue in a one-sided manner." Commenting on statements by US Ambassador, Kenneth Brill, that a one- sided stance by one of the communities of the island on a complicated issue such as that of Yugoslavia does not help cooperation between the two sides, Serezis said "if this has any repercussions on efforts to resume talks, then we shall be officially informed about it". "We believe this will not affect attempts to start talks," he added. Responding to questions, Serezis said the government "has formulated its policy on the specific matter, taking into consideration the interests of the country." Asked to comment on a meeting here of European left-wing parties, Serezis said that "anything concerning peace or contribution to peace in this turbulent region cannot but be regarded as positive". CNA MM/RG/1999ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY2010:CYPPRESS:06[06] EU - Yugoslavia - Cyprus - EmbargoBrussels, Apr 22 (CNA) -- The EU has called on its members, Cyprus and other candidate countries to comply with a decision, to be finalised by Monday's meeting of foreign ministers, to impose an embargo on the sale of oil and its by-products to Yugoslavia. The embargo is due to come into effect on Wednesday, EU sources have said. Today's common EU position says that "the sale or supply of petroleum products to the FRY will be prohibited" but points out that this prohibition will not apply to sales or supplies for verified humanitarian purposes, in particular for the needs of internally displaced persons and returnees. In article 2, of the EU position, it notes that the presidency "will ask the associated countries of Eastern and Central Europe, Cyprus and the EFTA members of the EEA to align themselves with this common position." The EU position will be kept under constant review, it adds. There is no reference to additional measures relating to a freeze of industrial and monetary investment or a restriction on the movement of Yugoslav politicians and diplomats within the EU, or a freeze of assets of the Yugoslav president and his family. CNA NB/MM/RG/1999ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY2015:CYPPRESS:07[07] Left wing parties - ResolutionNicosia, Apr 22 (CNA) -- Leaders of seventeen left wing European parties, who concluded today their meeting in Cyprus, called for an end to the NATO campaign in Yugoslavia and a halt to the hostilities in Kosovo. They also expressed their solidarity with the struggle of the people of Cyprus for a just solution to the Cyprus problem and the reunification of their divided island, in line with UN resolutions. Representatives from twelve European countries gathered here for a two- day meeting, at the invitation of Cyprus' left-wing AKEL party to discuss the crisis in Yugoslavia and seek ways to promote peace in the region. The resolution was released at a press conference by Andros Kyprianou, in charge of AKEL's International Relations. In their resolution, party leaders strongly condemn NATO air strikes and say the campaign "violates flagrantly international law and the UN Charter". They also express solidarity to "the heavily afflicted people of Yugoslavia" and call for the resumption of political dialogue under the aegis of the UN with the participation of Russia in order to reach a solution to the problem. A solution which would safeguard the refugees' right to return to their homes in safety as well as their human and political rights, the resolution says. The solution should also safeguard autonomy for Kosovo and secure Yugoslavia's sovereignty and territorial integrity, it adds. Party leaders condemn NATO's intention to use ground forces in Yugoslavia, as this would further destabilise the region and call for more efficient humanitarian aid for the refugees "in their temporary country of residence". Referring to the future settlement of the crisis, the seventeen party leaders reject proposals for a solution guaranteed by NATO troops, adding this should be undertaken by the UN. They denounce NATO's role as a "world policeman" as this would lead to further "substitution of the UN" and arbitrary use of force. They decided to organise a series of events in the days to come in order to mobilise public opinion in their respective countries such as "human chains" in Yugoslavia itself, in a bid to prevent air strikes. The resolution was approved unanimously, "in spite of the parties' different assessment of the Yugoslav government's policy on Kosovo", the party leaders pointed out. In a written statement on the Cyprus issue, they express their solidarity to the people of Cyprus in their struggle "for a just solution to the problem and the reunification of Cyprus on the basis of the relevant UN resolutions". CNA GG/MM/1999ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY2020:CYPPRESS:08[08] President Clerides - Children - UNNicosia, Apr 22 (CNA) -- The continuing Turkish occupation of part of Cyprus forces Greek Cypriot and Maronite children to choose between being with their families or being educated on secondary level, President Glafcos Clerides has said.In his address to the annual conference of the European Forum for child welfare, the President described as a milestone in international law the UN Convention on the rights of the child. This, he pointed out, safeguards and promotes the fundamental rights of the child and has formed the basis of legislation and policies relating to the welfare of children. "The Turkish invasion of 1974 threatened seriously family unity and stability since one third of the population was uprooted from their ancestral homes and communities were disintegrated," the President said in his address. He noted that in the occupied areas, secondary education is not allowed for the Greek Cypriots and the Maronite community. "As a result, children must either be deprived of secondary education or be separated from their parents in order to attend secondary school education in the free area under the control of the government of the Republic of Cyprus," Clerides added. The illegal Turkish Cypriot regime in occupied Cyprus imposes many restrictions on Greek Cypriots living there, including travel, education and religious restrictions.
