The House President said the Cyprus problem and Greco-Turkish relations will be addressed during a discussion on peace in the Mediterranean and the parliaments' role. Kyprianou underlined the importance of garnering support from Parliamentary speakers "on our EU accession course and a Cyprus settlement." Cyprus, which has been divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion, began substantive accession talks with the EU last year. However, the House President appeared pessimistic with regard to the Cyprus question "because of the Turkish side's stance and the fact that Turkey does no feel any need or pressure to change its attitude." Referring to the Conference, Kyprianou said an initial decision has been taken to make it a yearly event and noted that parliaments are beginning to play a more serious role in relation to decisions taken by the EU.
