[02] Human Rights Committee - Ocalan

Nicosia, Feb 26 (CNA) -- The Committee for the Restoration of Human Rights Throughout Cyprus, welcomed statements by the European Parliament, and European Union Foreign Ministers for a fair trial for Kurdish rebel leader Abdullah Ocalan.

Pointing out that the whole world will be following carefully whether Turkey creates the preconditions for a fair trial for Ocalan, the Committee stresses that the EU has the obligation to secure human life, freedom and dignity.

The best way to celebrate the completion of 50 years since the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and since the establishment of the Council of Europe would be to demand the implementation of international law and human rights both for Ocalan and Cyprus, the Committee concludes.

Turkish troops illegally occupy 37 per cent of Cyprus Republic territory since Turkish troops invaded the island in 1974, despite numerous UN resolutions calling for their withdrawal.

    [03] Bank Manager - Embezzlement

Nicosia, Feb 26 (CNA) -- A Popular Bank branch manager has been arrested on suspicion of having embezzled more than one million Cyprus pounds of the clients' money (one Cyprus pound is trading at 1,9 US dollars).

According to a police statement, the manager of the Stavros branch in Strovolos, 35-year-old Charalambos Kokkinos was arrested when a bank employee accused him of transferring money from the clients' accounts to a third account which then appropriated.

The money was transferred through the bank computer system, police said.

According to the Financial Crime Unit, who are investigating the case, there are so far testimonies leading to the embezzlement of 13.646 pounds, but the total amount may allegedly reach more than one million pounds.

    [04] UNFICYP - Women's day

Nicosia, Feb 26 (CNA) -- UN Peace-keeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) is organising a celebration for International Women's Day to acknowledge the important role of women in society.

Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots have been invited to attend the UNFICYP celebration to take place at the Ledra Palace Hotel, situated in the Nicosia buffer zone, on Saturday March 6.

UN Resident Representative, Dame Anne Hercus, points out in a written statement that the celebration "is an opportunity for us to honour the wives, mothers, sisters, friends and colleagues and to acknowledge the enormously important role women play in society, in the home, in the community and in the paid workforce."

A workshop will also be held "to help women who would like to learn how to work with the media".

    [05] Clerides - Cyprus problem

Nicosia, Feb 26 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides said today that Turkey's attempts to create tension in its relations with Greece would not succeed because it would meet the objection of Europe, the US and NATO.

Asked whether tension in relations between the two countries as a result of the Ocalan case could reflect on Cyprus, Clerides replied "I think Turkey could try to create tension but it will not succeed because Europe, the US and NATO would not allow it."

The US have repeated their position that "they consider the Cyprus problem as an issue of priority and that they are interested in a solution, but they believe they should not act before (the April) elections in Turkey, " Clerides added.

Replying to a question, President Clerides said that there were no indications of a Montreaux-type meeting in the summer.

President Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, had their last direct meeting in Montreaux, Switzerland, in the summer of 1997 in an effort to reach a Cyprus settlement which however ended in a deadlock due to Turkish intransigence.

President Clerides also dismissed Turkish claims that there are Kurdish military camps in the government-controlled areas of the Cyprus Republic.

"The UN peace-keeping force and foreign diplomats have free access everywhere, and everybody says no (such camps) exist," he pointed out.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 per cent of its territory.
