[01] Cypriot scientists - Novel form of hereditary disorder - Jordan

Nicosia, Feb 12 (CNA) -- A novel form of hereditary motor neuropathy has been identified and described by Cypriot scientists from the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics, in collaboration with the University Hospital of Amman and the King Hussein Hospital of Jordan.

This new type of the disease was named "Jerash" motor neuropathy after the name of the region that the patients come from.

Scientists of the neurogenetics laboratory of the Institute mapped the gene for this disease on chromosome 9.

The clinical and genetic findings for this disease were presented at the 1998 annual meeting of the American Neurological Association by Dr Lefkos Middleton and at the 1998 annual meeting of the American Society of Human Genetics by Dr Kyproula Christodoulou.

[02] Cypriot expert - European Patent Office

Nicosia, Feb 12 (CNA) -- Pantelis Kyriakides has been appointed vice- president of the European Patent Office in Munich, becoming the first Cypriot in a managerial position in a European organisation.

The 19-member European Patent Office is considered one of the most important organisations set up by European states.

Cyprus has been a full member since April 1998, the only one of the six fast-track candidate states for European Union accession to be accepted so far.

Kyriakides was born in Agios Epiktitos, Kyrenia, and studied engineering in London, specialising in telecommunications.

He worked at the British Patent Office from 1976 to 1981, moving to the European Office in Munich in 1981.

[03] President Clerides - Dame Ann Hercus

Nicosia, Feb 12 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides met this morning with UN resident representative, Dame Ann Hercus, within the framework of the UN- sponsored shuttle talks process.

Dame Ann will have more meetings next week with President Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktash.

In a short statement after the meeting with President Clerides, which lasted about 45 minutes, the UN envoy said "I have had another meeting in shuttle talk process with his excellency Mr Clerides this morning. I had a meeting yesterday with his excellency Mr Denktash".

She added "I am continuing next week to have two meetings with the two leaders".

The UN-sponsored shuttle diplomacy began in mid-October 1998 in a new bid to revise efforts for a settlement to protracted Cyprus problem.

Turkish troops have been occupying 37 per cent of Cyprus territory since 1974, in violation of repeated UN resolutions calling for their withdrawal.

    [04] Armed bank robbery

Nicosia, Feb 12 (CNA) -- Cyprus police have launched a manhunt to arrest two young armed robbers, who raided a Bank of Cyprus branch in central Nicosia, this morning, stealing some 50 - 60 thousand Cyprus pounds (one Cyprus pound is trading at 1,9 US dollars).

A police senior officer told CNA that two robbers wearing stockings and motor helmets and wielding pistols rushed into the bank at Diagoras street, at 0925 local time (0725 GMT).

Saying in Greek "we are poor, give us money", the two youths about 25 - 30 years old, according to witnesses, stole the money and escaped on a red and white dirt bike with false plates. One of the robbers fired a shot in the air.

Police cordoned the area and set up roadblocks. A helicopter is being used in the police manhunt.
