0815:CYPPRESS:01[01] Cyprus Airways - StrikeNicosia, Jan 28 (CNA) -- Some 2,000 passengers will be affected by today's strike by Cyprus Airways employees, which started earlier today.The four-hour work stoppage was scheduled to take place from 0700 to 1100 hours local time (0500 - 0900) and according to a Cyprus Airways spokesman, 20 out of 24 flights have been re-scheduled and some of them will be delayed up to five hours. Employees are demanding a 4,5 per cent pay rise before they sit at the negotiating table for talks with management. On Wednesday, Communications and Works Minister Leondios Ierodiakonou said the government will not be threatened into negotiations with the Trade Unions with strike measures. He called on employees to give up the strike and put their demand on the negotiating table to be discussed along with management demands. CNA MM/GP/1999ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY0930:CYPPRESS:02[02] Cyprus - Corruption ConventionNicosia, Jan 28 (CNA) -- Cyprus is one of twenty one European states that signed yesterday the Council of Europe Criminal Law Convention on Corruption, which will come into force when 14 states ratify it.The Convention covers various forms of corruption and corrupt behaviour, such as active and passive bribery of domestic and foreign public officials and of national and foreign parliamentarians. Money laundering of proceeds from corruption offences, accounting offences connected with corruption offences and bribery of domestic, foreign and international judges and officials of international court are also covered by the Convention. According to its terms, states are required to provide effective and dissuasive penalties and measures, including deprivation of liberty that can lead to extradition. Legal entities will also be liable for offences committed to benefit them and will be subject to effective criminal or non-criminal sanctions. The Council's Secretary General Daniel Tarschys welcomed the signing by so many member states, more than half (the Council has 40 members). The Convention was adopted by the Committee of Ministers in November 1998 and it forms part of follow-up action on the Council summit. It aims at a coordinated criminalisation of a wide range of corrupt practices, and sets out to harmonise national legislation and improve international cooperation to facilitate the prosecution of those who offer or accept bribes or to speed up proceedings.
