    [01] New Ministers assume office

Nicosia, Jan 7 (CNA) -- The new Ministers of Defence and Education and Culture, Ouranios Ioannides and Yiannakis Crysostomis, assumed office this morning.

Immediately after taking over their duties, the two ministers went to the Presidential Palace to take part at a meeting of the eleven-member cabinet presided over by President Glafcos Clerides.

Ioannides and Crysostomis succeeded Lykourgos Kappas and Yiannakis Omirou, who resigned on Monday, after their socialist EDEK party decided to withdraw from Clerides' government following President Clerides' decision not to deploy the Russian-made S-300 surface-to-air missiles in Cyprus.

Ioannides, who was an MP of the ruling rightwing Democratic Rally party (DISY), will be replaced in the House of Representatives by his party's runner up Christos Rotsas.

Rotsas will be officially proclaimed an MP during a ceremony later today.

Ioannides will keep up his party post as DISY First Vice President. Crysostomis was a Supreme Court judge.
