    [02] Kasoulides - Athens meeting

Nicosia, Nov 24 (CNA) -- The conclusions of this week's meeting in Athens between the President and the Greek Premier will be put before the National Council (top consultative body to the President on the Cyprus issue) for final decisions, Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides said here today.

President Glafcos Clerides and Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis are scheduled to meet on Friday to discuss the latest developments in the Cyprus questions.

"Nicosia and Athens will examine the national interest of Cyprus and Hellenism at large and draw conclusions," Kasoulides said after a meeting with House President Spyros Kyprianou, who is acting president in Clerides' visit to London.

Replying to questions, the Minister indicated, indirectly, that the purchase of anti-aircraft missiles would be on the cards at the Athens meeting.

There has been increased press speculation in Athens and Nicosia that the issue of the missiles will dominate the talks in the Greek capital.

Some papers have suggested Athens favours their deployment in the Greek island of Crete, instead of Cyprus, as originally planned, to help defuse possible tension in the region.

Clerides himself said before leaving Cyprus on Sunday the meeting in Athens will not focus on the SAM (surface-to-air missiles).

Asked if there is any glimmer of hope for progress in the UN effort to resume negotiations between the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides, Kasoulides said the international community has given some indications of its intentions to resume talks.

Discussions will focus on the Shengen Convention, European Union issues, local administration and matters relating to cooperation between the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation and Greek Television.

Justice and Public Order Minister Nikos Koshis will be acting Interior Minister during Michaelides' absence.

    [04] Interior Minister - Pourgourides - Inquiry

Nicosia, Nov 24 (CNA) -- The chairman of the House Watchdog Committee, who accused the Interior Minister of acquiring wealth through improper means, said he would not talk to two investigators looking into the allegations.

On his part, the Interior Minister Dinos Michaelides, who insists on his innocence, refrained from commenting on Pourgourides' position, saying everybody is allowed to have his own opinion, even if they are wrong.

Pourgourides informed the two investigators, appointed by the cabinet on Saturday, that he will not give them any statement as he believes "there cannot be an impartial criminal inquiry against a serving minister."

Pourgourides described the cabinet decision "a mockery" and said any evidence he has has already been submitted to the Attorney General.

"Therefore a full inquiry of the evidence can be carried out without any statement from me," the ruling right-wing deputy said.

President Glafcos Clerides did not accept the minister's resignation while the cabinet dismissed eleven of the charges levelled against him.

The inquiry will examine the circumstances of the sale of a flat involving the minister and cases relating to the immigration department, which Michaelides heads.
