    [03] DIKO - elections

Nicosia, Nov 22 (CNA) -- Spyros Kyprianou, whose authority as leader of the Democratic Party (DIKO) is challenged today for the first time, has called for unity on all fronts to help settle the Cyprus question.

He also welcomed the large interest of party members to vote and the big number of candidates for party offices, including three for the presidency, three for the post of deputy president and eight for three posts of vice-presidents.

Party members will elect a president, deputy president, three vice presidents, a general secretary and a general secretary responsible for organisational matters.

The conference will also elect the ten members of the Executive Bureau and the 86 members of the Central Committee.

"DIKO was set up with the pledge to fight for the rights of the people of Cyprus and not to accept any type of settlement which would not secure the survival of Cypriot Hellenism on this island," Kyprianou said before he cast his vote.

He called on everybody to unite and adopt a "demanding policy and an aggressive diplomacy and boost the country's defences and economy."

Kyprianou noted that the "huge interest in today's election conference indicates that DIKO members have decided to revamp the party and render it the political party which would lead the country to a better future."

Voting, which started earlier this morning, ends at five in the afternoon. Results are expected later tonight.
