1005:CYPPRESS:01[01] Priceless icons - recoveredNicosia, Oct 6 (CNA) -- Cyprus police have recovered priceless icons stolen from the Church of Apostle Barnabas and Saint Helarion at Peristerona village, west of Nicosia, last month.The icons were found wrapped in black plastic bags in a deserted tank in a secluded area between villages Dhali and Lymbia, south of Nicosia. The icons were stolen last month and among them were depictions of Saint Barnabas and Saint Helarion, dating from circa 1816 and artworks of Saint Nicholas, Saint Charalambos and the Ascension of Christ, all of which date from 1849. CNA MCH/GP/1998ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1150:CYPPRESS:02[02] Defence Minister of Britain, Argentine - UNFICYPNicosia, Oct 6 (CNA) -- The Ministers of Defence of Britain and Argentine, George Robertson and Jorge Dominguez, visited here today troops serving with the United Nations Peace-Keeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP).The two ministers, who arrived yesterday, visited the UN headquarters in Nicosia this morning and observed an exercise by the Mobile Force Reserve, a 105-strong multi-national UN group, which is deployed as a reservist force in contingencies faced by the UN. After the UN headquarters, Robertson visited the 310-strong British contingent while Dominguez visited the 410-strong Argentine contingent. The 1.200-strong UN force patrols the 180-kilometre-long buffer zone across the island, which has been divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion and occupation of its northern third by Turkish troops. Robertson told UN men at UNFICYP headquarters in Nicosia that "the work that is done by all of the different countries involved here is contributing to the peace and stability on this island, which hopefully as a result of the continued presence of the UN troops will one day be reunited again." He added: "I would like to pay tribute to the work that you do, the dangers that you face and the service that you are doing to the UN and peace to the world." Since UNFICYP's establishment in 1964, a total of 168 military and civilian police personnel lost their lives in Cyprus. The two ministers leave today. CNA/EC/GP/1998 ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1330:CYPPRESS:03[03] Russia - Turkey-Syria disputeNicosia, Oct 6 (CNA) -- Moscow supports a peaceful and diplomatic resolution of the Turkish - Syrian dispute.Russia's position was set out here today by the country's Ambassador to Cyprus, Georgi Mouradov, after meeting the leader of the island's ruling Democratic Rally party, Nicos Anastasiades. Invited to express his country's stance on the crisis between Turkey and Syria, Mouradov expressed Moscow's concern about developments in the region. "We are in favour of a peaceful, diplomatic solution of all issues between the two states", he said. He added Russia "is interested in the stability and peace in the region, which is very close to its borders". Anastasiades said instability in the region would have wider repercussions on all countries of the region. He said that if the crisis developed into a confrontation as a result of Turkey's aggressiveness, "it will be another opportunity for the international community to realise how justified we are in reacting to everything that is imposed and the tolerance which is shown towards Turkey's tendency to be a 'guardian' in the region". Referring to the meeting with the Russian diplomat, Anastasiades expressed gratitude to Russia's support on the Cyprus problem. Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 per cent of the island's territory. CNA MM/1998ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1430:CYPPRESS:05[05] Cyprus - Turkey - SyriaNicosia, Oct 6 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government today underlined that differences between countries should be settled through peaceful means.Invited to comment on Turkish threats against Syria, Government Spokesman Christos Stylianides stressed that each country's territorial integrity should be respected. "Countries should not resort to threats of force or the use of force. Any differences should be resolved through UN procedures," Stylianides said. He added that "there are peaceful procedures and we believe Turkey should act within this framework". Ankara has accused Damascus for allegedly supporting Kurdish rebels of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) fighting for self-rule in Turkey's southeastern areas. According to news reports, Turkey's military has cancelled leave for all units on the border with Syria. CNA MCH/MA/GP/1998ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1440:CYPPRESS:06[06] Exhbition "Offitec '98"Nicosia, Oct 6 (CNA) -- "Offitec '98", an office equipment and technology exhibition, will open on October 14 at the Cyprus International Fair grounds in Nicosia.The exhibition is organised by the Cyprus State Fairs Authority and supported by the Pancyprian Association of Importers and Representatives for Office Machines, the Computers and Software Suppliers Association and the Telecommunication Equipment Suppliers Association. Speaking at a press conference, Cyprus State Fairs Authority Chairman, Demetris Ioannou, said it is "certainly the biggest and most impressive specialised exhibition of its kind, organised in Cyprus". "It attracts interest from both Cyprus and abroad and has been established as an important commercial event" in the region, Ioannou noted. Referring to the main objective of the exhibition, he explained it is the modernisation of businesses, adding its target market comprises of professionals, students and the general public. A total of 108 exhibitors will participate in "Offitec '98" with products representing 559 companies from 24 countries. According to the organisers, the exhibition will attract more than 20 thousand visitors, of which "a significant number" will come from abroad. On display will be among others computers, telephone systems, office machines, filing systems and office furniture. Referring to the development of the computer and telecommunications sectors in Cyprus, Ioannou said 15 thousand computers and 20 thousand new telephone lines are installed annually. Minister of Justice and Public Order Nicos Kosis will open the five-day exhibition on Wednesday, October 14.
