[01] President Clerides - Israeli Health Minister

Nicosia, Sep 10 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides proposed today the establishment of a medical centre in Cyprus for the treatment of patients from the Middle East region.

The President made the suggestion during a meeting here with Israeli Health Minister, Joshua Matza, who is on a four-day visit to the island.

Describing the meeting as "very warm", Matza said President Clerides "raised a very interesting point of establishing a medical centre in Cyprus, with the support of the Israeli medical system, where people from all over the region can have their treatment".

The Israeli Minister said he would discuss the President's suggestion with his Cypriot counterpart, Christos Solomis, but pointed out that it is not a project on which decisions could be made quickly.

Matza said that they also discussed the intended visit of Israeli President Ezer Weizman to Cyprus, in November, and expressed certainty it "will strengthen relations between Cyprus and Israel".

Noting that both the Cyprus and the Israeli President served as pilots in the same air-force during the Second World War, Matza said he is sure "they will like to have a long talk going back to those days when they served in the war."

On his part, Cyprus Minister of Health, Christos Solomis, who also attended the meeting, said it was "very important".

The two Ministers will have official talks this afternoon and will sign a Plan of Cooperation in the Fields of Health and Medicine.

[02] House President - Israeli Health Minister

Nicosia, Sep 10 (CNA) -- House of Representatives President Spyros Kyprianou today raised concerns over defence cooperation agreements between Israel and Turkey with Israeli Health Minister Joshua Matza, who is visiting Cyprus.

"I did not fail to raise the issue of the agreements between Turkey and Israel, especially in the defence and military cooperation field," Kyprianou said after the meeting, noting however that Matza is not responsible for defence matters.

The House President said he did not ask for clarifications, but "underlined that it is an issue of concern to both the people of Cyprus and the people of Greece."

"There is an issue here for both Cyprus and Greece and I am sure the government and we (parliament) will raise the issue again, maybe with the Israeli Ambassador to Nicosia, at the initial stage," he added.

Kyprianou described his meeting with the Israeli Health Minister as "very good" and said they discussed cooperation between the two countries in the health field as well as prospects for further development of relations in other fields.

Replying to question, he said that efforts are underway for him to visit Israel and expressed the hope it will be arranged.

"We are in contact and an invitation for me to visit Israel has been extended but nothing has yet been confirmed. I will exchange views with the Israeli Ambassador in the next few days," Kyprianou concluded.

[03] House President - Greek MPs

Nicosia, Sep 10 (CNA) -- House of Representatives President Spyros Kyprianou today discussed cooperation with the Greek Parliament and Cyprus' European Union (EU) course with Greek MPs visiting the island.

A six-member delegation of the Greek Parliament European Issues Committee arrived in Cyprus Wednesday for a four-day visit during which they will meet ministers and their counterparts from all parties.

Greece's role in speeding up Cyprus' accession talks with the EU is important, Kyprianou said, adding they discussed the furthering of coordination and close cooperation in this field.

"Our national interests make Cyprus' accession to the EU of particular importance," Kyprianou added.

He reassured that cooperation between the two parliaments will become even stronger and said there will be an exchange of visits.

Head of the Greek delegation, Loucas Apostolides, said Cyprus' EU course is running smoothly and reassured of close cooperation between the two Parliaments.

"We have the best possible agreement and we tackle problems together," he said.

Apostolides also said that "in the view of the people of Greece and Cyprus the Republic's accession to the EU will constitute an important step in efforts to settle the Cyprus problem which is at a crucial stage."

He expressed certainty that all European leaders realise that Cyprus will soon become a member of the European family.

Tomorrow the delegation will call on President Glafcos Clerides and meet the Primate of the Church Archbishop Chrysostomos.
