1110:CYPPRESS:01[01] Archbishop - RomaniaLarnaca, Aug 28 (CNA) -- The Primate of the Greek Orthodox Church of Cyprus, Archbishop Chrysostomos, today left for Bucharest, Romania, to attend an international meeting on religions.Chrysostomos was invited by Romanian President, Emil Constantinescu and Patriarch Metropolitan of Muntenia and Dobrogea and Archbishop of Bucharest, Teoctist Arapasu. The gathering, entitled "Peoples and Religions", will take place between August 31 and September 1. Archbishop Chrysostomos said participants will discuss the relations between various religions and peoples and decisions will be taken. CNA MAN/EC/GP/1998ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1155:CYPPRESS:02[02] Cabinet - EUNicosia, Aug 28 (CNA) -- Cyprus has approved its negotiating positions on a number of sectors concerning its accession to the European Union.The decision was taken during this week's meeting of the Council of Ministers, chaired by President Glafcos Clerides. The sectors include science and technology, telecommunications and technologies of information, training and youth issues, cultural and audio- visual policy, industrial policy, small-to-medium-sized businesses, common external policy and civil security. The Cabinet authorised the chief of the Cyprus negotiating team to the EU, George Vassiliou, to proceed with the necessary actions to promote the sectors to the relevant EU bodies. Cyprus applied for EU membership in July 1990. It signed an association agreement with the European Community in 1972 and a customs union in 1987. Official membership talks with the EU started in March this year. CNA EC/GP/1998ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1420:CYPPRESS:03[03] United European Left - Press ConferenceLarnaca, Aug 28 (CNA) -- Jaako Laakso, the Chairman of the Unified European Left, of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (CoE), assured the group will use all available instruments to promote a peaceful solution to the Cyprus problem.Speaking at a press conference here Friday at the end of a two-day meeting of the group, Laakso said "our task is to use the instruments we have. We consider that a peaceful solution is the reunification of the island." Laakso said the group considers that "the main cause of the Cyprus problem is the occupation of part of the country by Turkish forces." Turkish troops have been occupying 37 per cent of Cyprus territory since 1974, in violation of repeated UN resolutions calling for their withdrawal. Laakso said he has a "feeling that Turkey's government understands that it is loosing its credibility in Europe by not fulfilling the decisions of the UN Security Council." He said he has very good contacts with many Turkish politicians who understand "it is necessary to withdraw the Turkish troops from Cyprus." "We think that Turkey is a part of Europe and that's why Turkey must act according to the European law and regulations", he added. Asked what had given him the impression that more and more Turkish officials understand the need for the withdrawal of Turkish troops, Laakso said "we must make a distinction between the government of Turkey and with some members of the Parliament." He added "I am not seeing any positive signs from the side of the Turkish government concerning the solution of the Cyprus problem." However, he stressed that at the same time, "during our discussions with Turkish members of Parliament, there are more and more who see that with that kind of policy the Turkish government is practising, Turkey is going to put itself into isolation". He also remarked that there a lot of people in Turkey who see that there must be a change in the Turkish policy, not only concerning Cyprus, but also the situation of human rights and the Kurdish issue. On his part, Doros Christodoulides, Cyprus' representative in the CoE Parliamentary Assembly, expressed his appreciation to the group and noted that choosing Cyprus to host the meeting "depicts the solidarity of the United Left with the struggle of the Cyprus people". The European deputies were due to visit the cease-fire line in Nicosia, this afternoon. CNA MAN/EC/GP/1998ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1425:CYPPRESS:04[04] Europe - Oceans - CyprusNicosia, Aug 28 (CNA) -- The Cyprus House of Representatives will be represented at a meeting in Lisbon of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (CoE) to mark the International Year of the Ocean.Cypriot Democratic Party MP Stathis Kittis will attend the "Parliamentary meetings on the oceans" which will take place between August 31 - September 1. The meeting will provide an opportunity for an exchange of views with the Independent World Commission on the Oceans and with representatives of maritime industries. It will also adopt a series of reports on the oceans to be debated at the September session of the Assembly in Strasbourg, including a proposal to set up a European Maritime Agency. Participants will visit Expo '98, which has designated September 10 as CoE day.
