CNA MM/1998ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1540:CYPPRESS:02[02] Israel - Seminar - CyprusNicosia, Aug 26 (CNA) -- The Israeli embassy in Nicosia is organising a seminar on business opportunities in Israel.Entitled "Seminar on Business Opportunities in Israel", the seminar will take place on September 3 at the Cyprus Hilton. Key figures of the Israeli economy, including the Chairman of the Federation of Israeli Trade Chambers, the Vice President of the Industrialists Association and the Director General of the Israeli Exports Institute, will address the one-day meeting. Cyprus Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Nicos Rolandis has been invited to speak and Chairman of the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Vasilis Rologis, is scheduled to talk to the delegates. Among the issues to be discussed are "Business Prospects in Israel", "Cyprus as a bridge towards Europe" and the "Prime Minister's Business Summit in Jerusalem." The Jerusalem Summit, to take place from 13-15 October, will provide businessmen with the opportunity to exchange views on matters of mutual interest. CNA EC/MM/1998ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1735:CYPPRESS:03[03] Clerides - Statements - AthensLarnaca, Aug 26 (CNA) -- No decisions have been taken regarding a possible postponement of the arrival of Russian anti-aircraft missiles, said here Wednesday Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides.He clarified that if any decision is taken in the future, it will be taken in Cyprus by the National Council, the top advisory body to the President on the handling of the Cyprus problem. Clerides was speaking at Larnaca airport, prior to his departure to Athens for talks with Greek Prime Minister, Costas Simitis. The President said that during tomorrow's meeting there will "be an exchange of views on the current position of the Cyprus problem, future handling, the island's European Union accession course, the joint defence pact between Cyprus and Greece, armaments and the Russian S-300 missiles." The meeting will also be attended by Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides and Defence Minister, Yiannakis Omirou. Asked if there were any developments making necessary the possibility of postponing the deployment of the missiles, scheduled for later this year, Clerides pointed out that "no decision has been taken, other than the National Council decision, which is well known to all of you". The Council decided to deploy the missiles unless there is sufficient progress towards a resolution of the Cyprus problem or moves leading to the demilitarisation of the island. "Even if such a decision is taken, it will be taken in Cyprus by the National Council," the President added. Replying to questions, he said both countries discuss various issues and take joint decisions as part of the joint defence pact. In some matters, he said, Greece's view weighs more, and in others, the Cyprus Republic's view is more important. "This is normal," President Clerides remarked. Asked whose opinion weighs more in this case, Clerides replied "in this specific case, both views are important". On Monday, Greek Foreign Minister, Theodoros Pangalos said that Greece "intervenes in an advisory manner, whenever asked, and the issue of the Russian anti-aircraft missiles the Cyprus government has purchased is a matter for the Republic of Cyprus alone." From Athens, Clerides will go to Durban, South Africa to take part in the Non-Aligned Movement's Summit. He returns to the island on September 5. CNA EC/MM/1998ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1815:CYPPRESS:04[04] Cyprus - Cabinet - YugoslaviaNicosia, Aug 26 (CNA) -- Cyprus-flagged vessels have been instructed not to transport any type of weapons to ports of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, in accordance with a UN Security Council resolution.The decision to prohibit the transportation of arms and military material to Yugoslavia was taken here today by the cabinet at its weekly meeting. The cabinet decision is in compliance with the Republic's international obligations, emanating from Security Council resolution 1160. CNA MM/EC/1998ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1845:CYPPRESS:05[05] UN - Observation PostsNicosia, Aug 26 (CNA) -- The UN intends to paint its blue and white observation posts in black and white, to avoid any confusion with the posts of the National Guard, the Republic's armed forces.Reliable sources have told CNA that UNFICYP has already notified the National Guard, and the Turkish occupation forces in the northern part of the island about its decision. It is understood that the Turkish military are somewhat concerned that the UN colours are similar to those of the Greek flag, flown along with the flag of Cyprus at National Guard posts. The UN spokesman, Waldemar Rokoszweski, could neither confirm nor deny the information about a change in UN colours. The National Guard and the Turkish occupation forces have observation posts on either side of the UN controlled buffer zone, where UNFICYP maintains its own posts. Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 per cent of the island's territory. CNA KN/MM/EC/1998ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1845:CYPPRESS:06[06] Conference - Unified European LeftNicosia, Aug 26 (CNA) -- The political group of the Unified European Left of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe meets here tomorrow in the southeast coastal town of Larnaca.A large number of deputies from ten member-states of the Council of Europe will take part in the conference, which ends on Friday. Acting President and President of the House of Representatives, Spyros Kyprianou, will open the conference which will be addressed by acting Foreign Minister, Christodoulos Christodoulou and AKEL General-Secretary, Demetris Christofias. The conference will examine the Cyprus problem, rapprochement between the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities, the economy of Cyprus and relations between Cyprus and the European Union. A discussion on NATO enlargement and European security will also take place on Friday. During their stay, the deputies will visit the ceasefire line in Nicosia. CNA EC/MM/1998ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1940:CYPPRESS:07[07] PSEKA - Enlightenment campaign - ChristopherNicosia, Aug 26 (CNA) -- The government has been urged to allocate more funds in a campaign to back its views and win public opinion to reap the benefits of the power of persuasion.The call came from Philip Christopher, President of the US-based International Coordinating Committee - Justice for Cyprus (PSEKA), who told a gathering of overseas Cypriots that both Cyprus and Greece need to invest more to press on with their positions on the Cyprus question and the purchase of Russian anti-aircraft missiles. "If the purchase of the missiles, which will cost millions of dollars, was also accompanied with an enlightenment campaign to explain why the missiles are needed, we would be in a stronger position," Christopher said here today. He proposed that both Greece and Cyprus spend more on public relations to strengthen their positions. Christopher recognised that the government's plans to deploy the Russian missiles have brought the Cyprus question to the forefront, albeit for the wrong reasons. He said the reduction in US annual aid to Turkey from 800 million dollars in 1989 to 300 m. was a significant achievement of the Greek American lobby. He also noted the legislation on missing persons in Cyprus, which led to an investigation into the fate of five American citizens missing since the 1974 Turkish invasion of the island. It was established that one of them, Andreas Kasapis, who was 17 at the time of his arrest in the summer of 1974, was in fact killed. The four-day meeting of the leadership of overseas Cypriot organisations ends tomorrow. Delegates will be briefed by Humanitarian Affairs Commissioner Takis Christopoulos, Press and Information Director George Hadjisavas and US Congressman Jack Reed. CNA AA/MM/EC/1998ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY2010:CYPPRESS:08[08] Boat People - RepatriationNicosia, Aug 26 (CNA) -- A further ten boat people were repatriated on Wednesday, bringing closer to an end the plight of the Arab and African immigrants, found stranded and half starved by the Cyprus authorities last June.A Police spokeswoman told CNA that 10 people from Bangladesh were repatriated this morning after nearly a two month stay at a hotel in the southern coastal town of Limassol. There were no problems at their departure, she said. Last month 10 Syrian nationals and three Lebanese were repatriated. On August 19, police moved 30 boat people from the hotel to detention cells in the eastern coastal town of Larnaca. A total of 113 people from Rwanda, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Lebanon, Iraq, Sudan, Libya, and the Democratic Republic of Congo had left Tripoli, Lebanon on June 18 on a small Syrian-flagged fishing boat after paying as much as 5.000 dollars each to go to either Greece or Italy. Without food or fresh drinking water, they were found 11 days later by a Ukrainian-flagged commercial vessel which towed their boat to Cyprus on June 29. Two passengers died during the voyage and were thrown into the sea. According to police, the only navigation instrument aboard the vessel was a compass which was malfunctioning.
