[01] California Senate - Cyprus resolution

Washington, Aug 25 (CNA) -- A resolution approved by the California Senate notes that the US government cannot allow Turkey to continue with its present intransigence in the Cyprus peace effort.

The resolution by Assemblyman Lou Papan, approved August 17 and released today, calls on the US President and Congress to actively support efforts to end the division of Cyprus.

"The Cyprus problem must end soon," Papan says, adding that "the US cannot allow the Turkish government to continue to stonewall any attempt at a resolution."

He points out that "the Turkish government is already responsible for thousands of refugees on the island and countless human rights violations, we cannot allow them to make the situation even worse".

Papan says he recently visited Cyprus, where the situation is "very volatile", noting that the Cyprus government has recently purchased a missile system "for its own defence against the Turks".

"If there is not a just settlement on the island very soon, the current hostility could easily expand, leading to international crisis," he concludes.

Turkish troops invaded Cyprus in 1974 and have since been occupying 37 per cent of the island's territory.

New efforts to reach a settlement have reached a deadlock in January, when Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash demanded recognition of the illegal regime in the occupied areas and the withdrawal of Cyprus' application to join the European Union if he is to return to the negotiating table.

[02] Turkish fire - Fishing boat

Nicosia, Aug 25 (CNA) -- Turkish soldiers aboard a patrol boat opened fire this morning against a fishing boat off Cyprus' eastern coast.

Police Headquarters confirmed that a Greek Cypriot's fishing boat was shot at but gave no further details.

A police spokesman told CNA no one was hurt. He said police are at the region investigating into the incident.

It is not the first time that the Turkish occupation troops have fired at fishermen in this region, near Paralimni.

Cyprus has been divided since Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 per cent of the island's territory.

    [03] Left-wing parties conference

Nicosia, Aug 25 (CNA) -- About 35 MPs from 11 countries will come to Cyprus to participate in the conference of the Unified European Left (UEL) of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly that will take place from August 26 to 30.

The conference, to be held in the southern coastal town of Larnaca, will be opened by House of Representatives President Spyros Kyprianou.

An address by Acting Foreign Affairs Minister, Finance Minister Christodoulos Christodoulou and left-wing AKEL General Secretary Demetris Christofias, will follow.

On the first day of the meeting, UEL political groups will be briefed on the Cyprus problem, rapprochement between the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities, Cyprus' economy and Cyprus and the European Union, by AKEL officials.

The meeting will also discuss NATO enlargement and European security and the UEL work.
