CNA MCH/1998ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1525:CYPPRESS:02[02] Attorney General - Limassol BishopNicosia, Aug 7 (CNA) -- Attorney General, Alecos Markides said today that Limassol Bishop Chrysanthos' house was searched yesterday after a court warrant.Speaking after a National Council meeting, Markides said the search took place in the framework of investigations in connection with a 3,7 million-US-dollar fraud also investigated by Scotland Yard. Markides did not expect an arrest warrant against the Bishop to be issued shortly because the case is not expected to be resolved within the next few days, as demanded by courts when they issue remand orders. The Attorney General said police investigations would continue and if necessary investigators would travel abroad or the assistance of foreign police could be asked. Markides will later today meet with Primate of the Orthodox Church in Cyprus, Archbishop Chrysostomos, to discuss the whole matter. The Holy Synod decided on Tuesday to set up a committee to investigate the whole issue. The Synod, made up of the Archbishop and district bishops, found that Bishop Chrysanthos had entered financial agreements without its permission. CNA AA/MCH/GP/1998ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1615:CYPPRESS:03[03] Onoufriou - sentenceLimassol, Aug 7 (CNA) -- The Assize Court convicted today a former clinic owner, accused of a bomb attack against a Limassol Judge and his daughter, to 18 years imprisonment.Andreas Onoufriou, 48, was found guilty of attempted murder against Judge Michalakis Mavronikolas and his young daughter Marina, in October 1996. As a result, Mavronikolas was seriously injured, while his young daughter suffered light injuries. According to the Assize Court, the prosecution proved the defendant's guilt beyond any reasonable doubt. Onoufriou had refused the opportunity given to him by the Assize Court to appeal for leniency, claiming that he was innocent and there was no reason to request mercy. CNA CS/MCH/RG/1998ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1720:CYPPRESS:04[04] President Clerides - Greek Foreign UndersecretaryNicosia, Aug 7 (CNA) -- The Greek Foreign Undersecretary, conveyed a message of solidarity to Cyprus from Greece, stressing that he bore no American proposal nor pressure from Athens to cancel the deployment of Russian defensive system S-300 on the island.Speaking after a working lunch with President Glafcos Clerides, Yiannos Kranidiotis said rumours about an American proposal and pressure from Athens on Nicosia "do not relate to reality", adding that he did not know the reasons behind them. "The only message I convey", he said, "is one of solidarity and identical views" of Greece with Cyprus. "This is the message we send to third parties: That Greece and Cyprus are united in the struggle for justice and the interests of the people of Cyprus," he stressed. Kranidiotis reassured that the two countries would not detract from the basic aims, which are, Cyprus' accession to the European Union and resolving the Cyprus problem, according to UN resolutions. "The substance of the Cyprus problem is the illegal Turkish behaviour," the Greek Undersecretary stressed, pointing to Ankara's refusal to comply with the directives of the international community and to withdraw its occupation troops from the island. Kranidiotis also made special reference to the Turkish side's refusal to enter a dialogue aiming at a Cyprus settlement and to take part in accession talks with the EU. Defending Cyprus' right to self-defence, he said the S-300 issue is not the dominant, but only part of issues preoccupying Greece and Cyprus. He said the two countries' concern is "the substance of the Cyprus problem, how to convince Turkey to comply with international law and UN resolutions, how the dialogue between the two communities will be resumed and how a process will begin which would help towards Cyprus' demilitarisation." "The S-300 is a weapon that strengthens Cyprus' defence, but our efforts aim at the demilitarisation of the island, on the basis of President Clerides' proposals," he concluded.
