1030:CYPPRESS:01[01] AHEPA - US - resolutionWashington, Aug 6 (CNA) -- Greek-American organisation AHEPA called upon the US to acknowledge responsibility for the Cyprus tragedy and to recognise Cyprus' sovereign right to self-defence, pending demilitarisation. In a resolution, approved unanimously by the Supreme Convention of the organisation AHEPA blames the US for the failure of negotiations for a Cyprus settlement, arguing that: "They failed to produce a settlement because of the faulty approach adopted by the US since 1974, that Cyprus is a traditional diplomatic problem where 'meet-in-the middle' negotiations involving compromises by each side can solve it." Pointing out that despite compromises by the Cyprus government, "Turkey has not reciprocated", AHEPA calls upon the US administration to "acknowledge that the US bears a national responsibility for the Cyprus tragedy". "Speaking publicly in Nicosia on November 11, 1997, Ambassador Richard Holbrooke described US actions in 1974 as 'shameful'," the resolution points out. It also makes special reference to State Department's Cyprus desk officer in 1974, Ambassador Tom Moyatt that: "A Cyprus solution is possible if the US steps up its responsibilities and remembers its own guilt." AHEPA accuses the US of encouraging both the coup against the Cyprus government back in 1974 and the Turkish invasion that came in its aftermath. "In recognition of these facts the Administration should now state that it is ending its current approach and that future talks will take place on the basis of restoring the status quo and the rule of law as it applied before Turkey's 1974 illegal invasion," AHEPA points out. It also calls upon the US "to issue a clear statement, that pending demilitarisation, the government of Cyprus has a sovereign right to self- defence, including by acquiring the S300 defensive system." Any Turkish military action against Cyprus should meet US decisive response, including military retaliation, the resolution adds. AHEPA stresses that the US should support Cyprus' application for accession to the European Union "without any linkage to Turkey" and should insist that Turkey comply with the European Court of Human Rights judgement regarding the case of Greek-Cypriot refugee, Titina Loizidou. ECHR ordered Turkey to pay some 600.000 US dollars compensation to Loizidou for depriving her the right to enjoy her property, in the Turkish- occupied town of Kyrenia. The Greek-American organisation call upon the US administration to take action to bring about the removal of all illegal Turkish colonists from Cyprus and the restoration to their original condition of the churches illegally converted to mosques in violation of the 1949 Geneva Convention. Even though great nuclear powers have abandoned the senseless and dangerous nuclear arms race, there are grave dangers as a result of the expansion of nuclear technology." They also point out that even nuclear technology used for "so-called peaceful purposes is dangerous and should be abandoned, especially in cases of countries like, for example, Turkey, who have hostile aspirations towards their neighbours". Turkey plans to install nuclear reactors at Akkuyu on the southern shores of the country, about 80 kilometres north of Cyprus. The Environmentalists handed petitions to the embassies of the UN Security Council permanent members in Nicosia as well as the embassies of India and Germany, appealing for a nuclear-free world.
