    Nicosia, Jul 24 (CNA) -- The Chairman of the Council of Overseas Hellenes, Andrew Athens, sent out a clear message today, that if the United States would like to see a settlement of the Cyprus problem, they have to be "pro- Greek and pro-Turkish", without that being misunderstood as favourable policy towards Turkey.

    Athens was speaking after a meeting with House of Representatives President, Spyros Kyprianou, accompanied by Andrew Manatos, Chairman of the Public Relations House, responsible for the coordination of Greek-American organisations.

    Athens and Manatos were also received by President Glafcos Clerides. Speaking after meeting Kyprianou, Athens said that all Hellenes are concerned because "a solution has not yet been found for Cyprus".

    He added that "we are here to help the (Cyprus) government" and exchange views on the situation and how to carry things forward.

    Asked to comment on US officials' statements describing the Turkish invasion as a "conflict", Athens said one should ask President Bill Clinton about this.

    He said that although the officials represent President Clinton, they sometimes use phrases which are not correct and do not express the American policy on Cyprus as it is.

    He also said that the US wants a solution to the Cyprus problem, noting that "they must be pro-Greek and pro-Turkish, if progress is to be made".

    Kyprianou said the aim is to "improve the situation" that has been created by "various recent negative statements and evaluations on behalf of the US", adding that the involvement of the US is "necessary for a proper solution to the Cyprus problem", although its stance has been "disappointing" so far.

    Referring to reactions regarding the deployment of the S-300 anti- aircraft missiles in Cyprus, Kyprianou wondered whether "Cyprus should not have the right to defend itself", stressing that "there have been so many proposals" on behalf of the Greek side "that could provide a breakthrough".

    He also said that the idea of creating a no-fly zone over Cyprus could be examined, but wondered whether that the US would guarantee the implementation of such an agreement.
