    [01] President receives US envoy

Nicosia, May 1 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides had a 40-minute meeting here today with US Cyprus Coordinator Tomas Miller, who arrived here to prepare the ground for talks US Presidential Emissary Richard Holbrooke will hold with the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides.

Miller described the meeting as "good" and noted he would be back later to continue the discussions.

"This is the start of a process and I really have nothing more to say," he said after the meeting.

Present at the meeting were Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides, Attorney General Alecos Markides, Undersecretary to the President Pantelis Kouros and Government Spokesman Christos Stylianides.

US Ambassador to Cyprus, Kenneth Brill, was also present.

Later today, Holbrooke will sit at a dinner hosted by the President and tomorrow morning he will see Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

[02] Russian wanted for murder to be extradited to Belgium

Nicosia, May 01 (CNA) -- A Russian man arrested last August on arrival at Larnaca airport in connection with a murder in Belgium in 1994 will be extradited to Belgium to stand on trial.

Three Belgian policemen arrived in Cyprus yesterday to escort 28-year old Oleg Diakonenkov to Belgium.

Diakonenkov was detained on his arrival at Larnaca Airport from Germany, as his name was on the stop-list after the Cyprus Police was alerted by Interpol.

Cyprus has had an extradition treaty with Belgium since its independence in 1960.

[03] Japanese officers to collect evidence on Japanese suspect

Nicosia, May 01 (CNA) -- Officers of the Japanese Police will arrive here on Sunday to receive evidence in relation to the case of a Japanese national wanted in connection with terrorist acts in Tokyo.

Toshiyasu Ouchi, leading member of the Japanese doomsday cult, was wanted in connection with a deadly gas attack in Tokyo underground in 1995, which left 12 people dead and thousands injured.

Ouchi was issued with two warrants, declaring him a persona non-grata and ordering him to leave the country.

He was deported to Japan last month.
