[01] Employers call for diligent harmonisation

Nicosia, Apr 26 (CNA) -- The Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KEVE), the island's largest employers' organisation, says the harmonisation process with the European Union "acquis communautaire" must be carried out with care in order to avoid negative effects on the economy.

A KEVE statement says this was the basic conclusion of a study on the consequences of harmonisation, in which concrete measures are also proposed.

According to the main preliminary findings of the study, which will be submitted to the government, Cyprus should seek financial aid from the European Union (EU), similar to that already granted to the Central and East European countries.

KEVE says this aid should be used "to support the economy's productive sectors, particularly the industrial", which is today open to competition from Europe.

Referring to the liberalisation of Cyprus' financial system, KEVE points out it should not affect businesses' activities.

As for the free movement of labour, it says employment and the social structure of Cyprus' labour force must be taken into consideration.

KEVE also calls upon the government to seek derogations for offshore companies in order to preserve the island's booming offshore sector.

Referring to the shipping sector, it says new privileges for the island's flag should be sought, if there is no possibility of retaining the existing ones.

KEVE points out that the harmonisation process constitutes a unique opportunity to modernise and upgrade the economy of the island.

The organisation points out that it has no intention to weaken the harmonisation process and adds the study will be analysed further.

Cyprus along with other five states began accession talks with the EU last month and its harmonisation with the "acquis communautaire" is under way.
