    [01] EU negotiating team announced

    by Nicos Bellos

Brussels Apr 1 (CNA) -- The European Commission officially announced today the names of its senior officials who will lead accession negotiations with the six candidate countries.

The officials are Austrian Leopold Maurer for Cyprus, Greek Nikiforos Sivenas for Estonia, Italian Giorgio Bonacci for Hungary, French Francoise Gaudenzi for Poland, British Michael Leigh for the Czech Republic and Spanish Jaime Garcia Lombardero for Slovenia.

German Klaus van der Pas, who has until recently served as the spokesman of the European Commission, will be in charge of all negotiating teams.

The first meeting will take place in Brussels, on Friday, April 3 and it is expected that meetings will be taking place on a weekly basis until the end of the year.

[02] US envoys due in Cyprus

Nicosia, Apr 1 (CNA) -- US Presidential Emissary for Cyprus, Richard Holbrooke, and State Department Special Coordinator for Cyprus, Thomas Miller, are expected to arrive here in the next couple of days.

Diplomatic sources confirmed to CNA today that Miller will arrive here on Thursday, April 2 and will be followed on Friday by Holbrooke.

The two officials are expected to have meetings with President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

No further details were given, however, concerning the duration of their stay in Cyprus or their schedule.

According to AFP, Holbrooke will be meeting Denktash on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Russian envoy for Cyprus, Vladimir Tchizov, is also expected to visit the island between April 2 and 5.

A spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry had told CNA last month that Tchizhov would visit Cyprus for talks with the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides, following his visits to Ankara and Athens.

Tchizhov paid a two-day visit to Ankara, on March 30 and 31 and, according to the same spokesman, would fly to Athens today.
