[01] Russian icons to be exhibited in Cyprus

Nicosia, Jan 29 (CNA) -- An exhibition opening here Saturday will give Cyprus public the opportunity to experience the great Russian religious art.

The exhibition "Masterpieces of the Orthodox Art: Russian icons from the 15th-19th century" introduces the finest creations of old Russian masters painted in tempera.

Cyprus Education and Culture Minister George Hadjinikolaou will open the exhibition Saturday night at the State Gallery in Nicosia.

The splendid works were discovered, conserved and studied by the masters working at the All-Russian Art Conservation Centre named after academician Igor Grabar.

Russian Ambassador to Cyprus Georgi Muradov stressed today that the exhibition is a mere demonstration that Russians and Cypriots are united by mutual, traditional friendly feelings as well as by deep historical roots.

He said this is the first time that this exhibition, which shows various icon-painting schools of Northern Russia, travels abroad.

Cyprus Education Ministry Cultural Services Director Nicos Panayiotou referred to the Christian Byzantine art in Cyprus, noting the huge damage to the island's cultural heritage caused by Turkish soldiers and settlers during and after the 1974 invasion and occupation of the island's northern third.

The exhibition takes place within the framework of the Cultural Exchange Programme between Russia and Cyprus.

It is organised by Ministries of Education of Cyprus and the Russian Federation, in cooperation with the Solvychegodsk History and Art Museum and the Cherepovets Museum Association.

[03] London hosts discussions on Cyprus

London, Jan 29 (CNA) -- The protracted Cyprus problem was among issues discussed in London today, over a working lunch UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, had with British Foreign Secretary, Robin Cook.

The Cyprus question is also expected to be discussed during a meeting Cook will have here on Saturday with US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.

A Foreign Office spokesman told CNA Annan and Cook had "a friendly discussion which covered Iraq, Africa, with special reference to Algeria, Cyprus and UN reform."

The US Secretary of State is expected to arrive in the British capital tomorrow afternoon and will hold talks with her British counterpart the following day.

The issues high on their agenda are the situation in Iraq, the Middle East peace process and the British Prime Minister's visit to the US next week.

UN-sponsored efforts to reunite Cyprus, divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied 37 percent of the island's territory, are expected to resume in March, after the presidential elections to be held in the Republic on February 8.

International interest to settle the problem was stepped-up last year.

The US President had appointed Richard Holbrooke, who brokered the Bosnian accord, as his special emissary for Cyprus.

On the other hand, Britain has a long involvement in efforts to reach a Cyprus settlement.

Britain is one of the three guarantors of the island's independence and sovereignty (the others are Greece and Turkey), since 1960 when Cyprus gained its freedom from British colonial rule.

[04] British soldiers in Cyprus on alert

London, Jan 29 (CNA) -- British Bases personnel in Cyprus is on alert of a "certain degree", due to the situation in Iraq.

Replying to a question by CNA today, a British Defence Ministry spokesman said "part of the personnel on the Bases have already been put on alert of a certain degree."

"The same happens in all Bases including those in Britain itself," he said, adding "the degree of alertness may increase according to developments."

Britain retains two military Bases in Cyprus since 1960 when it gave the island its independence from colonial rule.
