CNA MM/1997ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1600:CYPPRESS:02 President calls for unity to achieve common goalsEmbargoed until 18.00 GMT Nicosia, Dec 31 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides has called for unity in the coming year, which he describes as "the most crucial", and hopes that 1998 will contribute towards a Cyprus settlement and membership of the European Union. In his New Year's message, the President said "above all I hope that 1998 will pave the way for a settlement of the Cyprus problem and our accession to the EU". Calling for "the greatest possible unity" to help achieve these goals, Clerides warned that Cyprus will "pay very dearly for any mistakes". He said after February's presidential elections, the new initiative for a settlement will culminate and noted that wrong moves on the part of Cyprus may cost the country its EU membership and consolidate further the continuing division and occupation of part of the island by Turkish troops. "We all want to safeguard the future of Cypriot Hellenism in the land of our fathers and we must all help to achieve these goals", the President stressed. He said the bitter and painful memories of the Turkish invasion and the continuing occupation of one third of Cyprus "strengthen our determination and endurance and keep our optimism and hopes alive that justice will perhaps soon be restored in our long-suffering country". Justice for Cyprus, the message added, means conditions of permanent peace and security, progress and prosperity in a federal Republic of Cyprus which will be a member of the great European family. "Such a solution will be just, viable and workable", the message concluded. CNA MM/RG/1997ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCYCyprus News Agency: News in English Directory - Previous Article - Next Article |
