CNA MA/1997ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1645:CYPPRESS:02[02] Britain backs bicommunal activity, says spokesmanNicosia, Dec 29 (CNA) -- Britain considers bicommunal activity as "positive and constructive" because it helps Greek and Turkish Cypriots to get to know each other, a spokesman for the British High Commission has said."We regret the decision to suspend bicommunal activity but we very much hope that it will resume," he told CNA today, commenting on a decision by the illegal Turkish Cypriot regime to suspend bicommunal contact. After the decision a dinner British High Commissioner, David Madden, was to have hosted tomorrow night at his residence for some 60 businessmen from both sides of the divide has been canelled. Madden, the spokesman added, is due to see Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash later this week and the issue of bicommunal contacts would be raised. Britain, he noted, has already made contact with Turkish Cypriots responsible for taking the decision to suspend bicommunal activity. "Bicommunal contact is positive and constructive because if a bicommunal federation is to be established, people will have to know each other," the spokesman noted. Replying to questions, the spokesman acknowledged that to a certain extent these contacts may not be "perfect" but he stressed "they are better than nothing and help people to get to know each other." Britain, he said, backs bicommunal contact as a means of assisting Greek and Turkish Cypriot, who will live under a federal roof, to get to know each other. The regime in the areas occupied by Turkey since its 1974 invasion of the island decided to suspend most bicommunal activities as from last Saturday, December 27. It supported the decision was taken to give it time to study a European Council decision taken in Luxembourg earlier this month to open European Union accession talks with Cyprus in spring 1998.
