CNA MA/1997ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1855:CYPPRESS:02[02] New Cyprus Ambassador to IsraelNicosia, Dec 18 (CNA) -- Cyprus' Ambassador to Israel Evripides Evriviades and Israeli President Ezer Weizman pledged to boost existing relations between the two countries.Presenting his credentials to President Weizman, recently, Ambassador Evriviades briefed him on recent developments in the Cyprus problem. The two men exchanged views on bilateral and regional issues of common interest and expressed satisfaction over existing relations between Cyprus and Israel, pledging to boost them even further. CNA MCH/MA/1997ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1925:CYPPRESS:03[03] Decline in organised crimeNicosia, Dec 18 (CNA) -- Organised crime in Cyprus declined in 1997, in comparison to 1996, but there has been an increase in drug-related cases.This was pointed out today during a meeting between senior police officials and Minister of Justice and Public Order, Nicos Koshis. According to official records, reported serious crime cases decreased from 4.038 in 1996 to 3.615 this year, showing a 10,48 percent drop. Four murder cases were reported in 1997 in comparison to 10 in 1996. However, four of the 1996 murders were committed by Turkish occupation troops against unarmed Greek Cypriots. None of the murder or attempted-murder cases reported in 1997 were related to organised crime, police officials said. In 1997 there was a steady increase in drug-related cases, in comparison to 1996. Two hundred and twenty-five cases were reported until November 1997, compared to 170 during the same period last year, showing an increase of 32, 35 per cent. The percentage of drug-related cases successfully investigated in 1997 was nine percent, the same as last year.
