[01] DPA opens Arabic Desk in Nicosia

Nicosia, Dec 15 (CNA) -- The German news agency, DPA, launched Monday an international service in Arabic, which will reach subscribers in the Arab world directly from DPA's newly established Arabic Desk in Nicosia.

Thomas von Mouillard, DPA's Deputy Editor-in-Chief and head of foreign services, said "after nearly 30 years of fruitful cooperation with Egypt's Middle East News Agency (MENA), DPA decided to relaunch the service under its immediate editorial control with enhanced contents reflecting the changed news requirements in the area."

Walter Richtberg, DPA President and General Manager, praised the high standard of service offered in Cyprus.

"During my visit I was impressed and I am thankful to the public services which responded so well to our needs", he said, adding that he was particularly grateful to the support extended by the Cyprus News Agency (CNA).

Nabil Megalli, Editor of DPA's Arabic Desk in Nicosia, said the new service will run from 0600 local time to midnight, seven days a week, with gradual upgrading to a full 24 hours operation within the course of 1998. CNA/GP/1997
