CNA EC/GP/1997ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1410:CYPPRESS:03[03] US want closer EU relations with Turkey and CyprusNicosia, Dec 1 (CNA) -- The United States support the strengthening of the relations between the European Union (EU) and Turkey. At the same time, they fully back Cyprus' accession to the EU.US Ambassador in Nicosia, Kenneth Brill, told reporters today after meeting President Glafcos Clerides, it "has been a long standing American government policy to support the strongest possible relationship between Europe and Turkey". He said "in our view, Turkey is part of Europe, it's part of the institutions in which we are a partner with Europe, and that includes NATO, and the OSCE". At the same time, he said, it "has also been long standing US policy to support Cypriot accession to the EU. We have been working on that consistently". Referring to the European Council, which will take place between December 12-13 in Luxembourg, Brill said "an awful lot has been said and done" regarding the summit. The ambassador said it "is an important venue for the Europeans to consider the next steps for their relationship with Turkey". Furthermore, it is "obviously an important occasion as regards the next steps for Cypriot accession", he stressed, adding that it is important that both of these things move forward. Explaining his views, Brill said "that for the American strategic perspective and for the European strategic perspective it is important that the EU and Turkey have close cooperative relations". He stressed that this "has nothing to do with Cyprus". "At the same time, we think it's important for Cyprus to be part of this growing Europe". Brill expressed the view that the Europe of the 60s and the 70s is going to be very different than the Europe of the next century. "We are in a transitional period right now, where these institutions are moving from the period of the Cold War to the period of the 21st century. We think that part of that process should be a deepening of the relationship with Turkey and the inclusion of Cyprus as part of the EU", he added. However, Brill reminded that the US "are not part of the EU, so all we can do is to give them our view, we do not have a vote". Regarding his meeting with Clerides, Brill said he brought him up to date with the conversations that are held "all over the place about issues which are significant".
