    [01] Workshop on agriculture development

    Nicosia, Nov 24 (CNA) --Sustainable development could only be achieved within the context of an environment free of security threats and territorial expansionist claims among states, Cyprus' Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment Minister Andreas Mantovanis said today.

    Mantovanis was opening a regional workshop on "Sustainable Agriculture for the Middle East and Mediterranean Countries", in the presence of Israeli Ambassador to Cyprus, Shemi Tzur.

    Delegates from Israel, Greece, Italy, Egypt, Morocco, Yemen, and Tunisia participate in the workshop, which is organised jointly by the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment of Cyprus, and the Israeli Ministry of Agriculture.

    The Workshop is part of the existing cooperation programme on agriculture between Cyprus and Israel.

    Referring to the dilemma of modern times between economic growth and environment conservation, Mantovanis said Cyprus fully shares the concern that the prevailing trends in the global food production and trade, are creating enormous ecological stress and environmental destruction.

    If these developments are not put under control, they "will have irreversible consequences" on natural resources, on which agriculture relies, Mantovanis pointed out.

    "Thus, we have endorsed the principles of sustainable development, and have set in motion processes to integrate the goals of environment conservation, into those of our economic and social policy", he added.

    [02] European Airlines Conference to meet in Cyprus

    Nicosia, Nov 24 (CNA) -- The Association of European Airlines Conference, expected to focus on the main problems facing European air transports, will be held on Friday (November 28), in Nicosia.

    Heads of the 27 largest European airlines are expected to gather in Cyprus, the national air carrier of which, Cyprus Airways, celebrates this year its 50th anniversary.

    A Cyprus Airways press release described the fact that the Associations' supreme body will meet in Cyprus as a very important event for Cyprus and its national carrier.
