1220:CYPPRESS:01[01] Cyprus in IMO councilNicosia, Nov 22 (CNA) -- Cyprus has been re-elected member of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) council for the next two years.Cyprus was re-elected in the 16-member IMO council among 24 candidate countries, during Friday's session of the Organisation's biennial General Meeting in London. An official press release issued here described Cyprus' re-election as a "great international success." Addressing the IMO meeting, the island's Communications and Works Minister Leontios Ierodiakonou underlined the importance attached by Cyprus on merchant shipping. He repeated the island's adherence to international regulations, particularly on security and prevention of sea pollution issues. The Ministry's Permanent Secretary Vassos Pyrgos said the re-election had shown the international trust to the Cyprus flag and the government's policy on merchant shipping issues. Cyprus will be an IMO council member until 1999. Asked to comment on recent statements by Britain's Special Representative on Cyprus, Sir David Hannay, that a number of settlers would remain here after a Cyprus solution, President Clerides said these had disturbed him but not worried him. The Greek Cypriot side has a clear position on the issue, he explained, that the withdrawal of Turkish occupation troops and settlers from the island would be both part of a Cyprus solution. "We are not committed by what Hannay has said," he noted and said Turkish efforts for the pseusdostate's recognition would fail. "A lot of influential people have repeatedly stressed to the Turkish side not to expect any recognition," he said. President Clerides hailed the recent joint meetings between leading Greek and Turkish Cypriot businessmen and said efforts towards bridging the gap between the two communities should continue, since they are destined to coexist on the island. Only Turkey recognises the puppet regime and the UN itself has called on all states "not to recognise" the self-styled entity and "not to facilitate or in any way assist the aforesaid secessionist entity." Turkish troops have been occupying 37 per cent of Cyprus territory since 1974, in violation of repeated UN resolutions calling for their withdrawal.
