[02] Greek, Turkish Cypriot party leaders meet

Nicosia, Oct 30 (CNA) -- The leaders of two Cypriot parties agree on the objectives they should aim at as far as Cyprus' future is concerned.

George Vassiliou, of the United Democrats, and Mehmet Ali Talat, of the Republican Turkish Party, agreed that a Cyprus solution should be found through negotiations and be based on UN decisions.

They also said a settlement should be based on UN set of ideas on the fundamental aspects of the Cyprus question and that Cyprus should look forward to its accession to the European Union.

Their views differ on the timing of EU membership and the start of accession negotiations.

Speaking after a meeting in Nicosia, Talat believes Cyprus should join the EU after a political solution if found and backs Turkish Cypriot participation in this process.

Vassiliou said accession talks will start and called on the Turkish Cypriots to recognise that the EU's interlocutor in the talks is the Republic of Cyprus.

"I do not expect an agreement on these matters at present but we agree on the goals we are aiming at," he said.

Talat said he hoped the international community would find a way to accommodate the Turkish Cypriots on this score.

[03] Legislation on enclaved in US House of Representatives

Nicosia, Oct 30 (CNA) -- Republican Congresswoman, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R- FL), introduced legislation in the US House of Representatives addressing the plight of Cypriot enclaved.

President of the International Coordinating Committee -Justice for Cyprus (PSEKA) and President of the Pancyprian Association of America, Philip Christopher said:

"The resolution addresses an important, yet little known humanitarian aspect of the Cyprus problem by calling for a US effort to end restrictions on the freedoms and human rights of the enclaved in the Turkish-occupied part of the island."

A similar resolution will be introduced in the US Senate in the near future.

The legislation was introduced on the same day Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash had an unofficial meeting with several members on developments in the Cyprus problem.

As a Congressman stated, Denktash discussed "concerns over the lack of progress towards a peaceful, negotiated settlement of the Cyprus problem".

Some 500 Greek Cypriots and Maronites have remained in the Turkish- occupied northern part of the island since the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus.

Their living conditions have been repeatedly described by the UN and other international organisations as "abnormal".

Andrew Athens, National Chairman of the United Hellenic American Congress (UHAC), said "the plight of the innocent enclaved Greek Cypriot populatio
