[01] Cyprus marks Greek anniversary

The anniversary marks Greece's refusal to surrender to an unconditional ultimatum by the Axis forces and is celebrated in Cyprus with church services and parades in all towns.

The Primate of the Orthodox Church of Cyprus, the Greek Deputy Foreign Minister, the Greek Ambassador and other state and military officials watched the parade from the podium.

Archbishop Chrysostomos officiated the church service held at Saint John's Cathedral in Nicosia earlier today.

War veterans, school pupils, university students, scouts and organisations took part in the parades.

The Interior Minister took the salute in the southern coastal town of Limassol, the Defence Minister in Larnaca, Agriculture Minister in Paphos and the Justice Minister in the eastern resort of Paralimni.

Parties issued announcements marking the occasion, in which they stress that the message of love for freedom and democracy shown during that period should guide Greek Cypriots in their struggle for justice and freedom for their country.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded the island and occupied 37 percent of its territory.

Speaking after a parade marking "October 28", when Greece refused to surrender to an unconditional ultimatum by the Axis forces, Archbishop Chrysotomos stressed the need for unity and common goals among political leaders and the people.

The Primate pointed out that Greece's history has been one of struggle for freedom.

"We in Cyprus, who are struggling for our freedom should be taught from this epoch," he said.

"We must reject foreign suggestions (for a Cyprus settlement) which will directly or indirectly lead to the partition of our country."

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied 37 percent of the island's territory.

Acting President, House President, Spyros Kyprianou took the parade salute, outside the Greek embassy in Nicosia.

Parades and church services were also held in other towns.
