[01] Turkey matters to Britain and EU

London, Oct 14 (CNA) -- A British Foreign Office spokesman said Turkey matters to Britain and the European Union (EU).

The spokesman was invited by CNA to comment on Minister of State for European Affairs Douglas Henderson's two-day visit to Turkey and whether he will pass a few messages there.

He said Britain and the EU are interested in the stability of the region.

"We want to develop Turkey's relations with the European Union during Britain's EU presidency and we support the Union's stand, for Turkey's participation in February's conference", the spokesman said.

But Turkey needs to show to Europe it's readiness for political and economic reforms, as well as its human rights performance to the EU standards, the British spokesman added.

He said the EU is to open accession negotiations with Cyprus next year and "we look to all sides, including Turkey, to support the UN in the search for a settlement in the island."

    [02] Clerides briefs EU ambassadors

    by Myria Antoniadou

Athens, Oct 14 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides briefed today in Athens seven ambassadors of European Union members and candidate countries on the latest developments in the Cyprus problem and Cyprus' EU accession course, as well his meetings in New York, Strasbourg and Britain.

President Clerides met for one hour with EU troika ambassadors Hendrik Wagermatkers (Holland) and Sir Michael Llewellyn Smith (Britain) and the ambassadors of Hungary, Slovenia, Ireland, Austria and Poland.

Speaking after the meeting, Poland's ambassador accredited to Cyprus Voitek Lamentowick, said the President informed them about his meetings in the USA, Europe and the prospects of negotiations with the Turkish Cypriot side for a settlement.

He said Cyprus and Poland "are in the same boat" as far as European integration is concerned and negotiations will "start on time" early next year.

"We are assured by the EU member - countries that it will happen", he added.

Austrian ambassador, Hans Sabaditch, said the Cyprus President briefed them on latest developments so that they can report to their governments in view of the EU summit in Luxembourg, in December which he described as "instrumental".

Sabaditch, who is accredited to Cyprus, said the key to fruitful negotiations for a Cyprus settlement, "lies in Ankara".

"I hope the EU can offer something to Turkey to change its hard line", he added.

The Austrian ambassador pointed to the formula for "customs union, plus" for Turkey and said the Union and Ankara will have to find "a middle solution."

He added Clerides briefed them on violations of Cyprus' air space by Turkey's planes and statements by Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash that all doors for a solution are closed.

The ambassador expressed the view that Cyprus' EU prospect is "one of the tools to find a solution a reasonable solution where both communities can live with".

Present at today's briefing were Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides and Cyprus' ambassador to Greece Charalambos Christoforou.
