0830:CYPPRESS:01[01] US missile sales to Greece, TurkeyWashington, Oct 10 (CNA) -- The US Department of Defense announced yesterday its plans to sell advanced air-launched missiles to Greece and Turkey.According to the Pentagon announcement, Greece will buy 20 Harpoon anti- ship missiles for 35 million dollars. Both Greece and Turkey will get AMRAAM anti-aircraft missiles. Greece will get 90 AMRAAM missiles for 42 m. dollars and Turkey 138 for 62 m. dollars. The Pentagon announcement includes the disclaimer that the sales "will not adversely affect either the military balance in the region or US efforts to encourage a negotiated settlement of the Cyprus question." The sales will go ahead unless the US Congress acts to stop them. It is ironic that at the same time and with repeated statements the US government expresses its opposition to the sale of Russian S-300 surface-to- air missiles to Cyprus. One of the main arguments of the US government is that such a sale would destabilise the region. Needless to say that Turkey claims that the S- 300 missiles would affect the military balance in the region. Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops armed with US weapons invaded and occupied 37 per cent of its territory. CNA DA/GP/1997ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1420:CYPPRESS:02[02] Cyprus participates in "World Telefood"Nicosia, Oct 10 (CNA) -- Cyprus will participate in the "World Telefood", the first global television appeal of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) to the general public to raise funds for food security projects and activities.Cyprus' participation in the event was today announced by Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment, Costas Petrides. Petrides, who was addressing the ceremony of the World Food Day in Nicosia, said the target set for Cyprus is 100 thousand Cyprus pounds (one Cyprus pound is equal to 1,9 US dollars). The Minister called on all Cypriots to contribute to Telefood and said he was confident that the target will be met. Of FAO's 174 member-states, 86 face food insufficiency problems, while according to a FAO recent report, 800 million adults and 200 million children under the age of five worldwide do not have access to adequate food, the Minister said. In his message delivered by Amor Ben Romdhane, FAO's Representative in Cyprus, the Director General of the Organisation says "World Telefood" consists of a series of television events organised simultaneously at national level in the participating countries, and internationally from Rome. The initiative has two major objectives: to raise awareness and mobilise resources in order to achieve food for all, the message says. Telefood will take place between October 17-19. CNA GG/GP/1997ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1430:CYPPRESS:03[03] "Nikiforos '97" startsNicosia, Oct 10 (CNA) -- National Guard's annual military exercise code- named "Nikiforos '97" started here today, parallel with Greek annual airforce and naval manoeuvres "Toxotis".The five-day exercise, with live ammunition, started Friday with the enlistment of the 9.000 National Guard reservists to take part. "Toxotis" will be taking place within the Nicosia FIR (Flight Information Region), between Cyprus and the Greek Aegean island of Rhodes. Greek airforce and navy participating in "Toxotis", which also started today, will take part in this year's National Guard exercise, it was officially announced yesterday. Greece's National Defence Minister Akis Tsohatzopolulos will arrive in Cyprus on Monday to watch the last part of "Nikiforos '97", which will climax with a military parade. President Glafcos Clerides and the Greek Defence Minister are expected to take the salute of the parade next Wednesday. The governments of Cyprus and Greece agreed in November 1993 to create a joint defence pact to face Turkish expansionist designs. Turkish troops have been occupying 37 per cent of Cyprus territory since 1974, in violation of repeated UN resolutions calling for their withdrawal.
