    [01] Spokesman on missing

Nicosia, Oct 2 (CNA) -- An agreement between the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus to exchange information about the fate of the missing persons includes those unaccounted for since the Turkish invasion of 1974, as well as those since the 1964 clashes.

According to Government Spokesman, Manolis Christophides, information will be requested "for all our missing persons".

Christophides said that a meeting between the representatives of both sides is expected to be set up soon, to exchange information, "which will subsequently lead to whatever needs to be done, according to the agreement, to determine the fate of the missing".

He also stressed that various aspects of the issue will not be dealt with separately and said the objective is to deal with the problem as a whole.

Christophides said whenever "we are ready, we should move forward", stressing that the issue should be promoted promptly and not be put off constantly.

[05] T/C denounces human rights violations in occupied areas

Nicosia, Oct 2 (CNA) -- A Turkish Cypriot student has denounced human rights violations by Ankara and its puppet regime in the Turkish-occupied part of Cyprus.

In a letter to US President Bill Clinton, Ibrahim Denizer, 27, says Turkey's ulterior goal is to obliterate the Turkish Cypriot community.

"€nkara wishes to assimilate the Turkish Cypriot community with Turkey and this runs contrary to the wishes of the Turkish Cypriots to live in a reunited Cyprus," Denizer stressed.

The letter never reached its destination because it was seized by the occupation regime and Denizer was arrested.

After a long delay it reached the International Association for the Protection of Human Rights in Cyprus.

The Association's Vice President Christos Clerides told CNA that he received Denizer's letter in September which calls for help to halt the violation of human rights of Turkish Cypriots in the occupied areas.

Denizer condemns the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus, human rights violations, as well as Turkey's educational, cultural and social interference in the occupied areas.

In a letter to US Ambassador to Cyprus Kenneth Brill, Clerides calls for Denizer's protection.

Brill is also asked to forward Denizer's letter to President Clinton.

[06] President leaves for New York

Larnaca, Oct 2 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides departed today for New York for talks on the Cyprus problem and especially his proposal for the demilitarisation of the island.

President Clerides will address the UN General Assembly and have meetings with UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, and US Presidential Emissary on Cyprus, Richard Holbrooke. He will then move on to Washington, Strasbourg, London and Athens.

Speaking on departure, President Clerides said the objective of his meetings will be "to promote a solution to the Cyprus problem" and stressed he will focus especially on the demilitarisation of the island, Turkish threats against Cyprus and other issues regarding the Cyprus problem.

Asked to comment on his meetings with Holbrooke, President Clerides said Minister of Finance, Christodoulos Christodoulou, will be present in one of the meetings, during which the Cyprus problem will not be part of the discussion.

He also said the Governor of the Central Bank, Afxentis Afxentiou, will be in New York as well to meet with trade officials interested in investing in Cyprus.

[08] Greek Americans welcome moves on missing

Nicosia, Oct 2 (CNA) -- Greek American leaders have welcomed the government's readiness to exchange information with the Turkish Cypriot side about missing persons in Cyprus in a bid to resolve this issue.

Philip Christopher, President of the International Coordinating Committee - Justice for Cyprus (PSEKA) and the Pancyprian Association of America, applauded the announcement and called on Turkish - Cypriots of good faith, "to step forward to ensure that Denktash (Turkish Cypriot leader) fully complies with the July agreement to immediately and simultaneously exchange all information on the missing in Cyprus".

On the same issue, Andrew Athens, President of the World Council of Hellenes Abroad (SAE) and national Chairman of the United Hellenic American Congress (UHAC) said "this major effort to close a purely humanitarian chapter of the Cyprus tragedy comes at a crucial time".

Athens stressed that "this good - will gesture, if implemented fully, will strongly contribute to the overall movement toward peace on Cyprus".

He also pointed out that "the world community, led by the US, the UN and the EU mounts perhaps the strongest effort in 23 years to bring about a just and viable Cyprus settlement."

In July the UN brokered an agreement between the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides to exchange information about the missing by the end of September this year.

The Greek Cypriot side said earlier this week it was ready to hand over the information and expected the Turkish Cypriot side to reciprocate.
